If your platform already runs on Kubernetes, you probably don’t want an AI gateway that lives outside it. You want something that deploys as part of your cluster, speaks the same ingress and configuration patterns your team already uses, scales horizontally, and treats LLM traffic as one more workload to route and secure rather than a special snowflake in someone else’s cloud. The good news is that several mature, cloud-native gateways have added strong AI capabilities, so you can extend patterns you already operate to model traffic. For background, see our recent coverage.
This guide ranks five gateways for Kubernetes-first teams, weighing cloud-native fit and performance alongside AI features.

What Kubernetes teams should weigh
The priorities here differ from a pure SaaS shopper’s: a deployment model that’s genuinely cloud-native (containers, the Kubernetes Gateway API, GitOps-friendly config); high throughput and low added latency at scale; multi-provider routing with failover; guardrails and access control expressed in the same config surface as the rest of your traffic; and observability that flows into your existing stack. The five below all run cloud-native; they differ in how AI-specific the tooling is and how much comes from a commercial tier.
1. TrueFoundry â cloud-native and built for AI, in your cluster
TrueFoundry leads because it runs inside your own cloud and Kubernetes environment while giving you a purpose-built AI control plane rather than a general gateway with an AI plugin. Its AI Gateway deploys in your environment and provides a unified interface to 1,000+ models, with virtual models handling load balancing, retries, and fallbacks behind stable names, plus guardrails, role-based access, budgets, and OpenTelemetry observability that plug into what you already run.
Because it also governs MCP servers and agents, a Kubernetes platform team gets one system for models, tools, and agents instead of stitching several together. The routing model is documented in TrueFoundry’s virtual models guide, and it’s proven at scale, with Staffbase pooling 141 model deployments across nine regions behind one endpoint. You get cloud-native operation and AI-native depth at once.
Best for: Kubernetes teams that want an AI-native control plane running in their own environment. Watch-out: more platform than a team wanting only a lightweight proxy will initially use.
2. Apache APISIX â high-performance, open-source, plugin-driven
Apache APISIX is a cloud-native, high-performance open-source gateway with a serious AI proxy layer. It routes across many providers, does multi-LLM load balancing that adapts weights by latency, cost, and stability, and offers retries, fallbacks, RAG augmentation, content moderation, and token-level logging, all through its plugin system. For teams that want raw performance and full control with no vendor lock-in, it’s a natural cloud-native fit.
Best for: teams wanting a fast, open-source, plugin-extensible gateway in Kubernetes. Watch-out: higher-level governance and dashboards are more DIY than turnkey.
3. Traefik Hub â cloud-native ergonomics with an AI safety pipeline
Traefik is a staple of cloud-native ingress, and its AI Gateway extends that into LLM traffic. It turns any AI endpoint into a managed API with unified multi-LLM access, centralized credentials, semantic caching, and multi-provider failover, layered with a composable safety pipeline (parallel guard execution, token-level cost controls, and integrations such as NVIDIA NIM guard middleware). If Traefik already handles your ingress, adding AI governance is low-friction.
Best for: teams already running Traefik that want AI governance in the same tool. Watch-out: deepest value when Traefik is already your ingress layer.
4. Tyk â open-source gateway with broad protocol support
Tyk is a widely deployed open-source API gateway that runs comfortably in Kubernetes and now spans AI. Through its AI Studio it offers model routing, budgets and cost controls, RAG, tools and agents, RBAC, PII redaction, and audit trails, and it covers a broad protocol set, REST, GraphQL, gRPC, TCP, and MCP, so agent tool calls can be governed per tool right alongside your APIs. For teams that want one open-source gateway for everything, it’s a strong option.
Best for: Kubernetes teams wanting one open-source gateway across APIs and AI. Watch-out: some AI features live in the AI Studio layer, so confirm the split.
5. MuleSoft â Anypoint Flex Gateway extended to AI
MuleSoft’s AI Gateway is built on the Anypoint Flex Gateway, which runs cloud-native and at the edge, making it a fit for teams already using it for API traffic. It provides unified access to multiple providers without exposing provider keys, payload normalization, token limits, PII masking, fallback routing, and AI-specific policies including MCP support and attribute-based access control, all managed through Anypoint. It keeps AI traffic in the same runtime you already deploy.
Best for: teams running Anypoint Flex Gateway who want AI in the same runtime. Watch-out: value is tied to the MuleSoft/Anypoint ecosystem.
How to choose
For a pure open-source, high-performance core, APISIX and Tyk are excellent cloud-native choices, and Traefik Hub is the obvious pick if it’s already your ingress. MuleSoft fits Anypoint shops extending into AI. But if you want a cloud-native deployment that is also a purpose-built AI and agent control plane, running in your own cluster and proven at scale, TrueFoundry leads.
The bottom line
Kubernetes teams should expect an AI gateway to fit their operational model, not fight it: cloud-native deployment, high throughput, and config that lives where the rest of their traffic does. Every option here delivers that. The one that combines cloud-native operation with AI-native depth across models, tools, and agents is TrueFoundry, which is why it’s the one to beat.
