Rockstar Games Launcher 2026: Chromium 143, GTA 6 PC Signals

The Rockstar Games Launcher is no longer a footnote in PC gaming infrastructure. With 18.3 million monthly active users playing Grand Theft Auto V across all platforms as of January 2026, a critical software update shipped on March 31, 2026 that explicitly added support for a version of Windows 11 that does not yet exist, and an update cadence that has since carried the client through version 1.0.108.2970, which Rockstar actually shipped in July 2026 to improve title management, and on to version 1.0.109.3031 – the newest downloadable build, published on October 4, 2026 to fix cloud-save “Out of Memory” errors and BattlEye install issues, according to RockstarIntel – Rockstar Games is preparing its PC storefront for what could be its most consequential product launch ever: GTA 6, arriving November 19, 2026.

The update in question – version 1.0.106.2850 – swapped the launcher’s embedded browser to Chromium 143, replaced the Discord Game SDK with the Discord Social SDK, and added compatibility layers for Windows 11 26H1 and 26H2. The 26H2 build had not been publicly released by Microsoft at the time of the update. Rockstar kept shipping through the spring, pushing version 1.0.106.2857 on April 6, 2026 as a follow-up refinement, before jumping to version 1.0.107.2944 on June 23, 2026, a stability-focused patch that kept the same aggressive release rhythm going. That is not an accident. That is a roadmap signal.

Seven Years on the Shelf: How Rockstar Built a PC Platform Nobody Loves

Rockstar Games launched its PC launcher in September 2019, positioning it alongside EA Origin and Ubisoft’s then-named UPlay as a publisher-first distribution channel. The pitch was straightforward: sell games directly to PC players without paying Steam’s 30 percent revenue cut, and use cloud saves and a social layer to retain those players within Rockstar’s own ecosystem.

The timing was deliberate. GTA V was already one of the best-selling games in history, and Rockstar’s parent company Take-Two Interactive had watched Epic Games use Fortnite’s free-to-play success to build the Epic Games Store in 2018. Publisher-owned launchers were briefly fashionable. Bethesda had one. EA had one. Ubisoft doubled down on theirs.

What Rockstar built was narrower than the Epic or EA approach. The Rockstar Games Launcher was never a storefront in the commercial sense – it did not solicit third-party game listings or offer developer tools to outside publishers. It existed almost entirely to serve Rockstar’s own catalog: GTA V, GTA Online, Red Dead Redemption 2, Red Dead Online, and older legacy titles. Players are able to purchase those titles within the launcher, but the platform never evolved into a broader marketplace.

Between 2019 and 2025, the launcher received intermittent updates, most of them stability patches and backend maintenance – Rockstar Games’ own title-update notes trace this run back to at least version 1.0.100.2300 in January 2025, which removed “Remember me” and added cookie controls, and Uptodown’s version history logs at least seven separate 2025 builds after that (Install.Download lists version 1.0.101.2370 and version 1.0.102.2405 in March 2025, version 1.0.102.2459 in May 2025, and version 1.0.103.2534 in July 2025) before version 1.0.104.2618 shipped on September 16, 2025. Player sentiment ranged from neutral to hostile, with frequent complaints about login loops, slow download speeds, and a dated interface, though a quality-of-life change on September 17, 2025 at least let players choose which of Steam, Epic, or Rockstar’s own client would serve as their default launcher. Through that period, GTA V remained available on Steam, where it consistently ranked among the platform’s most-played titles – diluting the case for using Rockstar’s own channel.

That calculus began to shift in late 2025 – by December 11, 2025, Rockstar had pushed version 1.0.105.2733 for Windows, which Rockstar’s own release notes credited with further stability improvements, succeeding the short-lived 1.0.105.2730 build, part of a noticeably tighter release cycle – and the March 2026 update marks the clearest indication yet that Rockstar intends the launcher to serve as a primary distribution point for GTA 6 on PC.

March 2026 Update 1.0.106.2850: What Changed and Why It Matters

On March 31, 2026, Rockstar pushed launcher version 1.0.106.2850 – a release that looks routine in its patch notes but carries significant infrastructure weight when read in context. The official notes, published to Rockstar Support the same day, list six changes, and Rockstar followed up with version 1.0.106.2879 on April 30, 2026, which Rockstar Games credited with fixing launcher-installation errors, according to Uptodown’s version history, before pushing version 1.0.107.2944, which Uptodown recorded as a June 2026 release, and then version 1.0.108.2970 in July 2026 to improve title management, per Rockstar Games Support – underscoring how deliberately the studio has kept iterating on this build ahead of GTA 6.

The embedded web browser was updated to Chromium 143. The previous browser component was multiple major versions behind, affecting in-launcher web content rendering and compatibility with modern authentication flows. Chromium 143 is a current stable build, bringing the launcher in line with browsers used by competitors including the Epic Games Launcher and EA App.

The Discord Game SDK was replaced with the Discord Social SDK, a swap RockstarIntel confirmed in an April 2026 report on the update. This is a meaningful change in scope. The older Game SDK provided basic presence indicators – letting Discord users see that a friend was playing GTA V. The Social SDK, Discord’s newer integration layer, supports richer activity feeds, overlay compatibility, and deeper friend-network hooks. Switching to the Social SDK suggests Rockstar is preparing social features that go beyond passive presence.

Two performance issues were resolved: desktop notifications appearing too frequently, and reduced download speeds on select titles. The download speed issue, in particular, had been a persistent community complaint, with players reporting that downloads through the Rockstar launcher ran significantly slower than equivalent Steam downloads.

Most striking was the platform compatibility addition: explicit support for Windows 11 26H1 and 26H2. Windows 11 26H1 is a feature update that had not yet shipped broadly when the launcher update went out. Windows 11 26H2 had not been announced publicly at the time. Microsoft typically does not publish H2 version designations until mid-year. Rockstar’s update included it anyway – a forward-compatibility declaration that suggests the studio had early access to Microsoft’s developer preview program and was testing against builds months ahead of their public release.

A preceding update, version 1.0.105.2705, dated November 25, 2025 according to Rockstar Support’s own notes, had added support for handheld gaming Windows PCs – specifically citing the ASUS ROG Ally X and Lenovo Legion Go as reference devices. That same update also added compatibility with all three major controller families – PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch Pro – and introduced a silent install command-line switch (/f), first flagged by Rockstar Intel, that enables enterprise-style deployments without user prompts. Rockstar followed just over a week later with version 1.0.105.2720, documented December 3, 2025, which improved offline launching through the Xbox app for PC, per Rockstar Games Support. Taken together, these updates point toward a launcher being hardened for a substantially larger install base than GTA V’s existing PC footprint.

GTA Online’s 2026 Numbers: The Engine Beneath the Launcher

To understand why Rockstar is investing in launcher infrastructure, the player numbers need context. GTA V is not a game in decline. It is one of the most-played games on every major platform in 2026, thirteen years after its original release.

According to data from Ampere Analysis, GTA Online recorded 17.9 million players across Xbox, PlayStation, and Steam in March 2026 alone. That figure excludes players on the Rockstar Games Launcher or Epic Games Store, meaning the true monthly active user count is higher. A separate January 2026 estimate puts the global monthly active user total at 18.3 million, with 4.2 million daily active users across all platforms.

“GTA Online’s player retention numbers are extraordinary for a title of this age,” said Piers Harding-Rolls, Research Director of Games at Ampere Analysis, whose firm tracked the March 2026 data. “The 17.9 million MAU figure puts GTA Online third globally in monthly active users for that month, behind only Fortnite at 31.5 million and Counter-Strike 2 at 19.5 million. That longevity is the commercial argument for every infrastructure investment Rockstar makes in its PC platform.”

Leaked internal data from a 2026 Rockstar security incident, subsequently reported by multiple outlets including Rockstar Intel, put weekly GTA Online player counts at approximately 8.5 million across all platforms for the period from September 2025 to March 2026. The same data showed 878,284 active paying GTA+ subscribers, with a peak of over 1.3 million subscribers recorded on January 11, 2026.

GTA Online generated $403.9 million in 2024 and $400.4 million in 2025, according to the leaked revenue figures. The 2026 partial figure through April stood at $19.6 million. GTA+ as a cumulative product has generated over $5 billion since its 2013 inception.

PC’s 42% Slice: Why the Platform Distribution Story Matters

The breakdown of GTA V’s player base matters enormously for how Rockstar positions the launcher. According to a 2026 analysis, PC accounts for 42% of GTA V’s global player base – the largest single-platform share. PlayStation accounts for 35%, Xbox for 23%.

Applying that split to the 18.3 million monthly active user estimate produces approximately 7.7 million monthly active PC players. That cohort is distributed across Steam, the Epic Games Store, and the Rockstar Games Launcher itself – with no public breakdown of the exact share held by each PC channel.

On Steam specifically, GTA V Legacy shows 98,345 concurrent players with a 24-hour peak of 114,252. The Enhanced Edition, released in March 2025, shows 84,167 concurrent players with a peak of 98,983. Combined, Steam’s two GTA V versions surpass 180,000 concurrent players during peak hours – a figure that would rank among Steam’s top 10 most-played titles on any given day.

PlayStation 5 alone contributed 5.13 million weekly players in the US in a recent week, according to data surfaced through Sony’s PS5 Welcome Hub widget – placing GTA V as the second most-played PS5 game in the US for that period, ahead of the current Call of Duty and Battlefield 6.

“The PC share being the largest single slice is counterintuitive to people who associate GTA with console culture,” said Joost van Dreunen, adjunct professor at NYU Stern School of Business. “But PC players have longer engagement cycles, higher modding activity, and – for Rockstar – a direct-sales channel that doesn’t require revenue sharing. That 42% isn’t just an audience; it’s the highest-margin audience Rockstar serves.”

Platform-by-Platform Comparison: Rockstar Games Launcher vs. Competitors

The Rockstar Games Launcher occupies a different niche than its direct competitors. Unlike Steam, which carries more than 50,000 games and generated an estimated $8.6 billion in 2025 revenue for Valve, or the Epic Games Store with 78 million monthly active users and an 88% developer revenue split, Rockstar’s launcher serves a catalog of approximately a dozen titles – but with a combined player base that rivals any single game on either competing platform.

The Brazil Restriction: When Launcher Distribution Breaks Down

In March 2026, players in Brazil lost the ability to purchase Rockstar titles through the Rockstar Games Launcher on PC. The change was attributed to new local consumer protection and digital commerce laws that the Rockstar Games Launcher, as a direct sales channel, could not immediately comply with. Purchases remained available through the PlayStation Store, Xbox/Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store – all of which had already established compliant local payment infrastructure.

The episode illustrates both the risk and the operational complexity of a publisher-owned launcher as a primary distribution channel. Steam and Epic have dedicated teams managing regulatory compliance across dozens of markets. Rockstar – a games studio, not a platform company – does not have the same institutional breadth.

Brazil ranks among the top five gaming markets globally by player count. Excluding it from direct PC purchases while Steam and Epic continue to serve customers without friction is a meaningful competitive disadvantage – one that Rockstar will need to resolve before any GTA 6 PC launch if it wants its own channel to capture day-one sales in that market.

Rockstar has not publicly announced a timeline for restoring purchase functionality in Brazil through its own launcher. Players in the region continue to use alternative platforms for GTA V PC purchases.

GTA+ and the Subscription Layer That Justifies the Platform

GTA+ is the clearest argument for why Rockstar needs its own launcher infrastructure. Launched in 2022, the subscription service offers monthly benefits to GTA Online players – and its subscriber data, leaked in 2026, reveals both the ceiling and the opportunity ahead of GTA 6.

The 878,284 active subscribers represent approximately a 1-in-10 conversion rate from the 8.5 million weekly GTA Online players. The peak of 1.3 million subscribers on January 11, 2026 corresponds with a period of heightened GTA 6 anticipation – suggesting that subscription uptake correlates strongly with franchise momentum.

GTA 6’s November 2026 console launch, and any subsequent PC announcement, could drive a subscription surge that significantly exceeds the January 2026 peak. At its current pace, GTA+ generates roughly $400 million annually from a base representing less than 5% of GTA V’s total monthly active users – itself a reflection of the 42% PC share detailed above. GTA 6’s launch is projected to expand both the total player base and the addressable subscription audience – potentially by a significant multiple, given the franchise’s cross-platform appeal and the broader subscription gaming context of 2026.

Publisher Launchers in 2026: Why Rockstar Is Different

Rockstar’s continued investment in a proprietary launcher runs counter to a broader industry retreat from publisher-owned PC storefronts. Bethesda’s launcher shut down in 2022, moving its catalog to Steam. EA migrated its library back to Steam in 2019 and focuses the EA App primarily on launcher functionality rather than storefront competition. Ubisoft Connect has maintained a dual presence – storefront and launcher – but Ubisoft has publicly acknowledged that Steam generates meaningful sales volume that Connect cannot replicate independently.

Rockstar’s position is structurally different because of scale. GTA Online’s concurrent user counts on any single platform would represent a major service in their own right. The Rockstar Games Launcher does not need to attract third-party games because Rockstar’s first-party catalog alone sustains a player base of tens of millions.

“The publisher launcher model works when you have a game big enough to sustain a platform,” said Rhys Elliott, analyst at Midia Research. “Bethesda never had that critical mass. EA’s library is large but diffuse – no single title dominates the way GTA Online does. Rockstar is arguably the only publisher whose first-party catalog is large enough to justify a proprietary distribution layer on PC without depending on third-party content to fill the gaps.”

The Steam vs. Epic comparison remains the defining axis of PC gaming distribution. Steam holds approximately 74% PC market share. Epic has invested over $400 million in free game promotions and still has not broken into double-digit market share. Against that backdrop, Rockstar’s launcher exists as a vertical silo – not competing for market share but protecting a single franchise’s monetization pipeline from platform fees.

What the Launcher Updates Signal About GTA 6 on PC

GTA 6 PC has no confirmed release date or platform. The console version launches November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Rockstar has made no public statement about a PC version, although GamesBeat reported on October 13, 2026 that Rockstar plans to release GTA 6 on PC in the first quarter of 2027. That silence, combined with the launcher’s update cadence, is driving significant speculation.

The addition of Windows 11 26H2 support in a March 2026 update suggests Rockstar’s PC team was testing against Microsoft’s H2 2026 OS build months before its expected public availability. Windows 11 26H2 would typically ship in September or October 2026. Rockstar’s forward-compatibility work suggests the studio had early access through Microsoft’s developer preview program – the kind of access you request when you are preparing a major PC title for a specific launch window in that calendar year or the next.

On June 18, 2026, Rockstar updated the GTA 6 Xbox Store page with new cover art, and Rockstar later announced pre-orders in a Take-Two press-release entry dated October 13, 2026. Rockstar lists only PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as confirmed platforms, and a PC version remains unannounced officially, whether on Steam, Epic, or through the Rockstar Games Launcher itself. That absence is itself data.

Historical precedent from GTA V is instructive. GTA V launched on PS3 and Xbox 360 in September 2013. The PC version arrived in April 2015 – an 18-month gap. A comparable window applied to GTA 6’s November 2026 console launch would have pointed to a PC version in Q1 or Q2 2028, yet GamesBeat reports that Rockstar plans a PC release in the first quarter of 2027. The PC gaming market has grown substantially relative to console since 2013, and Rockstar’s own infrastructure investment is consistent with a compressed gap.

“GTA V’s PC delay was partly technical and partly commercial – maximize console sales before cannibalizing them with the PC version,” said David Cole, founder and CEO of DFC Intelligence. “In 2026, the PC gaming market is considerably larger relative to console than it was in 2013, and the modding community that drives PC longevity is a known amplifier for Rockstar’s long-tail revenue. A shorter PC gap benefits Rockstar more now than it would have in 2013.”

Where the GTA 6 PC Question Stands Now

GamesBeat reports that Rockstar plans to release GTA 6 on PC in the first quarter of 2027. Rockstar has not announced the PC version. GamesBeat’s sources place the PC version in Q1 2027, which runs from January through March, and no exact date has been reported. Grand Theft Auto VI launches November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Rockstar Report, in a piece published Oct 13, 2026, set that report against the studio’s earlier PC releases. Grand Theft Auto V reached PC on April 14, 2015. Red Dead Redemption 2 reached PS4 and Xbox One on October 26, 2018 before its PC release on November 5, 2019. Those launches kept PC players waiting for more than a year. A Q1 2027 release for GTA 6 would break that pattern sharply, even though it would still preserve a period of console exclusivity after November 19.

For PC players, the launcher itself is the part that is confirmed today. Rockstar’s launcher support page was updated on October 4, 2026, and the launcher is still supported for PC game installation, updates, account sign-in, troubleshooting, and game transfers. On the console side, Rockstar says digital pre-orders can begin pre-loading at local midnight on November 12, 2026. Until Rockstar announces a PC edition, a PC release date, a storefront, or system requirements, any PC timing should be treated as a report rather than a commitment, and keeping the launcher updated is the practical preparation.

Red Dead Online’s Data Point: The Baseline for Rockstar’s Platform

Red Dead Online received its last major content update in 2021. Rockstar formally ended active development, redirecting all resources to GTA 6. By conventional metrics, Red Dead Online should be a ghost town.

It is not. Leaked data puts Red Dead Online at 1.2 million weekly active users and approximately $26 million in annual revenue – consistent income from a product Rockstar no longer actively supports. That figure provides a meaningful data point for the absolute floor of Rockstar’s multiplayer retention even under conditions of complete content neglect.

For the Rockstar Games Launcher, Red Dead Online’s persistence means the platform never falls to zero even during the pre-GTA 6 drought. Players who log in for Red Dead are already inside Rockstar’s ecosystem when GTA 6 launches – a captive re-engagement audience that requires no acquisition cost.

Five Predictions for the Rockstar Games Launcher Through 2027

1. GTA 6 PC launches on the Rockstar Games Launcher first, with Steam and Epic following 6–12 months later. The infrastructure investment and Windows 26H2 pre-compatibility testing are consistent with a launcher-first PC distribution strategy. Steam availability will follow once the console sales window has been maximized – the same basic playbook as GTA V’s 2015 PC launch, compressed by market evolution.

2. GTA+ will exceed 3 million subscribers by Q1 2027. The correlation between franchise hype and subscription spikes was demonstrated in January 2026’s 1.3 million peak. GTA 6’s November 2026 console launch will drive another surge, and a PC announcement in early 2027 would add a third wave. The current 878,000 base sits well below the product’s likely ceiling.

3. The Rockstar Games Launcher will receive a redesigned storefront UI before end of 2026. The Chromium 143 update and Discord Social SDK integration are foundation-layer changes. A consumer-facing redesign – updated store interface, improved library management, GTA 6-specific social features – is the logical next step and would be timed to a PC announcement.

4. Brazil will restore purchase access through the Rockstar launcher before any GTA 6 PC launch. The market is too large to exclude from a direct sales channel when the franchise’s flagship title arrives on PC. Rockstar and Take-Two will invest in local payment compliance between now and any PC release date.

5. A GTA 6 PC announcement will come before The Game Awards in December 2026. Rockstar has historically used major industry events to time PC announcements after console launches. With GTA 6 console shipping in November 2026, December is the logical window for a PC confirmation that maintains Rockstar’s control over the news cycle while GTA Online is at peak activity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need the Rockstar Games Launcher to play GTA V on PC?

Not necessarily. GTA V is also available on Steam and the Epic Games Store, and those versions do not require a separate Rockstar Games Launcher install. However, GTA Online and any Rockstar-specific features require a Rockstar Social Club account regardless of which PC platform you use. GTA+ subscription management works most smoothly through the native launcher.

What was changed in Rockstar Games Launcher update 1.0.106.2850?

Released March 31, 2026, version 1.0.106.2850 updated the embedded browser to Chromium 143, replaced the Discord Game SDK with the Discord Social SDK, fixed an issue causing desktop notifications to appear too frequently, fixed reduced download speeds on certain titles, added support for Windows 11 26H1 and 26H2, and improved overall launcher stability. Rockstar followed with incremental point releases – including version 1.0.106.2874 on April 21, 2026, per Uptodown’s release history – before the larger 1.0.107.2944 update arrived in June 2026, followed by 1.0.108.2970 in July 2026 for title management and 1.0.109.3031 on October 4, 2026, which RockstarIntel reported fixed cloud-save “Out of Memory” errors and BattlEye install issues.

Will GTA 6 be on Steam or only on the Rockstar Games Launcher?

Rockstar has not confirmed a PC version of GTA 6 or any platform distribution details for PC, although GamesBeat reported on October 13, 2026 that Rockstar plans a PC release in the first quarter of 2027. GTA V is available on Steam, Epic Games Store, and the Rockstar Games Launcher. Whether GTA 6 PC follows the same multi-platform approach or launches exclusively through Rockstar’s launcher first remains unconfirmed, though the launcher’s 2026 infrastructure updates have fueled speculation about a launcher-first strategy.

How many people use the Rockstar Games Launcher?

Rockstar has not disclosed official Rockstar Games Launcher user numbers. GTA V’s PC player base represents approximately 42% of the game’s 18.3 million monthly active users globally (January 2026), equating to roughly 7.7 million monthly PC players across Steam, Epic Games Store, and the Rockstar Games Launcher combined.

Why can’t players in Brazil buy games through the Rockstar Games Launcher?

As of March 2026, players in Brazil can no longer purchase Rockstar Games titles through the Rockstar Games Launcher due to new local laws affecting the direct-sale channel. Purchases remain available through the PlayStation Store, Xbox/Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store, all of which have compliant local payment infrastructure in Brazil.

Is GTA Online the most-played online game in 2026?

GTA Online ranked third by monthly active users in March 2026, with 17.9 million players across Xbox, PlayStation, and Steam (excluding the Rockstar Games Launcher and Epic), according to Ampere Analysis. It ranked behind Fortnite at 31.5 million MAU and Counter-Strike 2 at 19.5 million MAU for that month.

What happened to Red Dead Online?

Rockstar ended active content development for Red Dead Online in 2021 to redirect resources to GTA 6. Despite receiving no new content in years, Red Dead Online maintains approximately 1.2 million weekly active users and generates around $26 million in annual revenue, according to 2026 leaked Rockstar data.

How does the Rockstar Games Launcher compare to Steam?

Steam is a full PC gaming marketplace with 50,000+ games, an estimated 132+ million monthly active users, Workshop modding tools, and deep social infrastructure. The Rockstar Games Launcher is a publisher-specific client for Rockstar’s approximately 12 titles. Steam retains 12–30% of game sales revenue; Rockstar retains 100% on its own launcher. For GTA Online specifically, Steam provides a massive existing player base and social graph that the Rockstar launcher does not currently match at scale.
