The iPhone Duo Opens Up the Screen as Mobile Entertainment Looks Toward 2027

Apple has made a major change to the iPhone lineup with the new iPhone Duo, its first foldable phone. Launching in the United States on October 23, 2026, with preorders opening October 16, 2026, at a starting price of $1,999, the Duo features a 5.4-inch outer screen and a 7.6-inch inner display that’s 80% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro’s, according to the Associated Press. While it might look like just a way to add more screen space, the real excitement is in how this extra room could change how we use apps, watch videos, and play games.

Apple has not treated the new format as if it were simply a stretched-out conventional iPhone either. iOS 27 adapts menus, navigation and controls to the foldable display, while Split View makes it possible, for the first time, to use two apps simultaneously on an iPhone. Netflix has already prepared its app to take advantage of the inner screen, and developers now have access to new APIs for creating experiences specifically designed for the format. With preorders opening October 16, 2026, just a week before phones start reaching customers, developers only have a narrow window to get foldable-ready builds finished, but if more apps built from the ground up for this form factor begin to appear throughout 2027, the Duo may ultimately become far more interesting because of its software than because of the hinge itself.

Video Games Probably Have the Most Room for Experimentation

This is where the new format really stands out. The 7.6-inch screen gives developers much more space for things like maps, inventories, and touch controls, so they don’t cover up the main action. Games like strategy titles, RPGs, simulators, or even Stake live casino games with streaming tables could use this extra room to keep buttons out of the way. Developers can also try out new interfaces that change based on whether the phone is closed, open, or set up on a table.

The iPhone Duo comes with the A20 Pro chip and a new vapor-chamber cooling system. Apple says this setup gives up to 35% better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro. The GPU is also up to 40% faster and more efficient than before, and the new cooling design helps the phone handle demanding tasks like high-frame-rate gaming. That extra headroom matters more given how the Duo is configured: it ships in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB capacities, with the top-tier 2TB model priced at $3,199, according to MacRumors, so buyers loading it up with games, 4K footage, and creative apps have plenty of room to work with. This is especially important for a foldable phone, since a big screen isn’t much help if the performance slows down after a few minutes of play.

Netflix, YouTube, and Creators Can Also Take Advantage of the Change

Entertainment on the iPhone Duo goes beyond just gaming. The large inner screen is almost like having a small tablet, making it easier and more enjoyable to watch shows, follow sports, view long videos, or browse while keeping other content open. Netflix already lets users watch clips on the outer screen before switching to the bigger display when the phone is unfolded. With Split View, you can do things like watch a live stream while chatting, check information during a broadcast, or use two apps at once.

The Duo’s design lets you stand the phone up without a tripod, use the outer screen so your subject can see themselves, and record video in up to 4K at 120 fps with Dolby Vision. Apple has also added features that show both the front and rear cameras at the same time during FaceTime. Apps like TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Twitch, and new platforms could come up with creative ways to use a phone that works as a camera, monitor, and editing station, all in one device.

2027 Could Be the Year We Discover What a Foldable Is Really For

The real value of the iPhone Duo might not be in just doing the same things on a bigger screen. The most exciting changes will happen when developers make apps that are designed specifically for a foldable phone. Apple already lets users open two windows from the same app, save app pairings, and move content between screens. By the end of 2026, the Duo will also support the USB-C Apple Pencil, making it even better for drawing, editing, and digital creation.

That’s why 2027 could be a big year for gaming and mobile entertainment. The iPhone Duo’s first full year will show what studios, streaming services, social networks, and developers can do with a new kind of phone after years of working with the same shape. At $1,999, roughly $800 more than the $1,199 starting price of the iPhone 18 Pro that Apple launched alongside it on September 18, 2026, the Duo will start as a premium product, but Apple could help make foldables more popular. Reuters points out that foldable phones are still less than 3% of the global smartphone market, but Apple’s launch could make them much more visible. The real shift might not just be about having the biggest iPhone yet, but about rethinking mobile entertainment so it’s no longer limited to a single, fixed screen.
