How to use file upload
Upload a file to Copilot using the following steps:
- Press the Open icon (+) and select Add images or files.
- Use the file picker to navigate to and select the file you want to upload on your device. Once uploaded, the file will appear as an attachment in your chat session.
- Type and submit a prompt that asks a question about the file, e.g. "describe this image" or "what recommendations would you give based on this document?"
- You can also ask follow-up questions about the file within the same conversation.
Example prompts with file upload
Here are some prompt ideas to get you started with File Upload:
- After uploading a resume: Can you help me write a cover letter I can send to the hiring manager for this entry-level marketing role? Call out my relevant experiences.
- After uploading a report: Give me a summary of this report and its top three recommendations. Also, provide an APA-style citation for this report I can use in an article I am writing.
How your files are handled
Files you share with Copilot are stored securely for a short time (no longer than 18 months) and then automatically deleted. Microsoft doesn't use the content of the files you upload to Copilot for model training.
If an upload doesn't work
- Make sure the file type is listed in Supported file formats.
- Make sure the file is 50 MB or smaller.
- If the conversation already has 20 files, start a new conversation to add more.
