After uploading your sources, you can:
- Ask the model questions about your source material.
- Give the model instructions to perform actions.
- Select which sources in your notebook the model should use to answer your questions.
To answer your questions and perform actions, Gemini Notebook uses direct quotes, text, and images from your sources as citations. These citations help you check response accuracy.
- To get the full quoted text, hover over any citation.
- To navigate directly to the quote and review it in context, select a citation.
Tip: Chat responses in Gemini Notebook only use data from your sources. If you ask for more creative tasks, like “rewrite the end of my short story,” you may get “Gemini Notebook can’t answer this question” in response. Try to rephrase or ask a different question.
Manage chat settings in Gemini Notebook
To customize your chat responses:
- Go to notebook.google.com.
- Select an existing notebook or create a new one.
- In the “Chat” panel, select Configure Chat
.
- Select a conversational style.
- Default: Best for general purpose research and brainstorming tasks.
- Learning Guide: Best for educational content, helping you grasp new concepts and skills efficiently.
- Custom: Best for choosing a specific style ("Respond like a PhD student”) or suggesting a role ("Pretend to be a role-playing game host.").
- Select a response length.
- Select Save.
Tips:
- To pin Gemini Notebook chat responses to the noteboard for your reference later, select Save to note.
- When you save a response as a note, the original format—including tables and clickable inline citations—gets saved.
- Chat history is retained and kept private to you. To clear chat history, select Delete Chat History using the three dots menu within the chat panel.
- In chat, to generate a note, select Add a note. You can also access features like Audio Overview and Mind Maps in chat.
Talk naturally with Gemini Notebook
Important: This feature is currently available only to users ages 18+ on the Gemini Notebook mobile app.
You can have a natural, free-flowing conversation with Gemini Notebook. Every answer is grounded in your uploaded sources, and you can interrupt at any moment, like when you want to add more details or change the topic of the conversation.
- Open the Gemini Notebook mobile app

- Select an existing notebook or create a new one,
- At the bottom right of the chat box, tap Audio
.
- Start talking.
- To turn off the mic, tap Mic
.
- To end the Live Voice Chat session, tap Close
.
- To turn off the mic, tap Mic
Tip: You can see transcripts of your interactions in chat. Respect others’ privacy and ask permission before you record or include them in a chat.
Learn about more chat features
You can use Gemini Notebook's agentic capabilities and advanced reasoning to take actions on your behalf. These actions include searching the web, running code, or creating downloadable files, charts, and images.
You can use this chat experience with or without sources to:
- Generate new outputs, including:
- Data visualizations and charts (png, svg)
- Documents (PDFs, Microsoft Word, Markdown, and text files)
- Images (png, jpg, gif)
- Structured data (CSV and json)
- Microsoft Excel (xlsx)
- Microsoft PowerPoint (pptx)
- Make changes to uploaded charts
- Modify artifacts as versions

- Complete research from within your chat where you can select and import your research report and sources into your notebook. Learn how to add or discover new sources for your notebook.
These new functions are experimental and in early development. Your supervision is important to help prevent unintended and potentially harmful actions. Gemini Notebook can make mistakes and do unexpected things. Be sure to double check it.
Change your chat request
To modify your request while Gemini Notebook is processing it:
- In the prompt box, select Stop
.
- Select an option.
- To revise your prompt, select Stop.
- To continue with the existing prompt, select Keep generating.
