Suikoden I&II HD Remaster Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars
60 Hours played
Suikoden I & II: A Timeless JRPG Experience

Suikoden I and Suikoden II are hands down my favorite JRPGs of all time. In fact, they’re among my favorite games ever. I was hyped when the remaster was announced. I still own the original PS1 discs along with the official strategy guides.

I've always considered Suikoden I and II as a single, cohesive experience. While you can play Suikoden II without playing the first game, I highly recommend starting with Suikoden I. There are returning characters, numerous references, and even unlockables and easter eggs if you transfer your Suikoden I save file into Suikoden II, which makes the story feel even richer.

The narrative in Suikoden is intense and well written, full of plot twists and memorable characters. But for me, the standout feature has always been the castle building mechanic. It’s so satisfying to recruit characters and watch your base grow over time. This mechanic has inspired other games too, like Ni no Kuni II, which I picked up specifically because of its similar system.

The remaster stays incredibly faithful to the original games while adding some much needed quality of life improvements. Diagonal movement, sprinting in Suikoden I, faster-paced battles, and other small tweaks make the experience smoother without compromising the charm of the originals.

10/10 Game
10/10 Remaster

Long live the Dunan Army!

Fun fact: If you had a Suikoden save file on your PS1 memory card back in the day, Psycho Mantis in Metal Gear Solid would mention that you like Suikoden. That moment absolutely blew my mind and honestly, it scared me a little too!

This game is a fever dream in every sense. It’s a wild mix of DOOM and Hotline Miami. Tons of boomer shooters are coming out nowadays, but this one stands out, because in this boomer shooter, you’re mostly kicking instead of shooting. And honestly, it’s weirdly relatable. In most games you’re saving the world for some dramatic reason, but here you’re kicking everyone in the face because they stole your sneakers. Think about it, how many people have borrowed something from you and never returned it? You want to kick them in the face, but you don’t want to go to prison.

You start each level with the exit roughly 60 seconds away. But good luck getting there, because you’re built like a 60 year old man, you die in one shot (two if you’re lucky). Everything kills you. If you walk too fast on the stairs you’ll trip and die, just kidding, you won’t. But seriously, it’s not an easy run from start to finish, especially if you’re trying to complete every challenge. If you’re just trying to beat every level, it’ll take around 4–6 hours. It took me 16 hours to beat every challenge. I died in some levels way too many times and in every way possible before finally beating them with zero damage, the true definition of git gud. I recommend trying to complete every challenge, it’s much more fun than just storming through each level.

Completing challenges unlocks new shoes that give you different abilities. One lets you charge, one lets you slide, one gives you a Call of Duty breach, one makes everyone drunk, big heads, become a dwarf, explosive doors… etc. Some abilities absolutely break the game and make you OP, which most modern games are too afraid to do. It’s like the AI will complain.

The enemy designs are unique. The game keeps introducing new enemies until the very end, from regular croc mobs to FBI pigeons to Illuminati rich gang members. The boss fights aren’t hard, but they’re creative and fun. The music is incredible, hardcore, violent, and fits the kicking theme perfectly.

The level design is great too. Levels feel smooth and addictive. Even though they’re around 60 seconds long, they’re designed so you can approach them with different strategies. There are also hub areas between levels where you can learn bits of lore, and you can kick every NPC for no reason.

Great game. Highly recommend.
