In all of his many years, Anakin never imagined he would find himself happy to be here, in this place. All of his life, he avoided Tatooine; it was considered an embarrassment to the empire he once ruled. Now, Tatooine had become the centre of his every dream.
The suns were beginning to set, a rare sight for the desert planet. Due to the double suns and the rotation of the planet, it wasn’t unheard of to have daylight for weeks at a time only to have darkness for just as long. At one time, villages would close business and withdraw into their homes with the coming dark. Now, with the encouragement of the elder king and his queen, the annual period of darkness had become a celebration of lights. Though the suns had yet to fully give up their skies to the moons, the celebrations had already begun.
It was with much teasing and playful banter that Anakin was finally able to convince his wife, Dormé, to take a break and join him. How the elder woman managed to be a planner, hostess, grandmother, mother wife, and queen with such ease never ceased to amaze Anakin. But for the moment, the petite beauty was just content to give into her beloved’s wishes and join his side.
Together they sat in the sand, watching in silence as the festivities began to unfold. Slipping an arm around her small waist, Anakin stole a kiss before feeling her calloused fingers slip into his other hand. Her amber eyes, so vibrant with love and life, held his gaze, causing Anakin to briefly forget his surroundings. Though her hair, once so dark, was now more grey and white, and her freckled were cheeks lined with wrinkles she was still radiant.
Squeezing his hand, Dormé’s smile widened as her free arm slipped around him. Anakin felt his heart skip a beat to the sight of her mischievous freckles that seemed to dance in the glow of twilight. Had it not been for their many children and their grandchildren, Anakin would have slipped off with Dormé in order to celebrate in private.
For now, he was content to sit by her side and watch as the celebrations unfolded. The sand gardens were filled with people and the sound of children’s laughter. Lanterns of every shape, design, and colour decorated the region while upbeat drinking songs were played by a variety of live performers.
However, the centre of attentions wasn’t the music, drinks, food, or even the vast array of lights. It was the small, but bubbling fountain that decorated the centre of the desert garden and the streams that flowed from it. It was but a small replica of the Skywalker’s most renowned legacy. Through careful engineering, much patience, and even more work, Anakin had succeeded in creating a variety of pumps and wells, designed to bring water to the desert’s surface. Though water was still considered scarce, almost everyone on the planet could now boast of having running water either in their city centre or somewhere nearby.
Though the king was renowned for bringing water to the desert, it was the queen they adored for freeing the slaves and making Tatooine have the most advanced medical care and education for younglings in the Outer Rim. While history would forever associate the Skywalkers with the galaxy’s dark ages, to the people of Tatooine, they would forever be praised for ushering in a golden era. But for Anakin, this was hardly a crowning achievement. In his mind, this was the least they could do after all the evil they had done.
The night carnival, however, had nothing to do with the past crimes or even the future. Anakin initially came up with the idea of a celebration of lights as a surprise for his beloved years ago. Dormé had never been to a carnival before, at least not the sort that didn’t involve politics or religion. The queen was thrilled by the surprise and so was the rest of their kingdom who were invited to participate. Now, years later, the tradition still continued and had become a part of Tatooine’s annual celebrations.
As Anakin held his beloved, his eyes settled onto the cheerful smiles of their many subjects. A slow smile of his own crept into his features as he gave Dormé a loving squeeze. He could still remember the early days of their time on Tatooine, the darkness, the loss of their children, and the helplessness of their situation. He also remembered the lessons learned, the simple joys experienced, and the growth of their love.
Anakin could now sincerely look back and know that the loss of their empire had been the beginning of their personal golden era, one that he hoped would surpass their lives and the lives of their children’s children. But in the end, it was his family’s joy that meant most to him and seeing them all alive and healthy was a reward Anakin knew he would never truly deserve.
Dormé rose to her feet and took Anakin’s hands. Her impish smile spoke all that needed to be said and before Anakin knew it, he was being guided to the garden’s centre so as to join in the festivities. Though he normally wasn’t one to dance, it wasn’t long before he was dancing and laughing with his wife as well as their children and their grandchildren.
Though history would always remember the Skywalkers as tyrants, to the people of Tatooine, they would forever be remembered as family.
