Lily - First fic in ages. Hope you like it!

Those three minutes of her life were the hardest for her to live. The mixture of emotions, the fear, the betrayal, the grief, the pure terror and horror that was tearing through her, bringing tears to her green eyes and goosebumps to her skin. The strained effort it was to pull in oxygen in shaky breaths as she ran up the stairs, desperate not for her own life, but for the life of her son.

They had known. Two seconds before he was outside their door, they had known. They had looked at each other, one word coming to their lips but left unspoken as the fear of what was about to happen hit them. "Harry." She ran from the room as the door burst open and a hollow laugh entered, snaking its way into the quiet house as James drew his wand and urged her upstairs with a look, before turning back to the monster waiting in the door.

A sob broke in her throat as she saw the green flash of light and heard the strangled yell and crash as the only man she had ever loved fell to the floor. She stumbled on the last step, knocking her shoulder against the wooden banister, before pushing open the door to her son's bedroom.

She turned as the door banged a second time, her breath catching in her throat as she tried in vain to sheild the child from view. Although fear bubbled in her throat, the only outward proof of it were the tears hanging onto her eyelashes. She took a step backwards and fell against the cot, crying out as the wind was knocked from her and a tear fell to her cheek.

"Please...." she begged, for the life of her son, not caring now about her own. What was her life without James? And now her son was to be taken too? The grief she felt was like a knife twisting in her gut, though she tried not to think upon it. There had to be a way, she had found ways before, she was resourceful, she was powerful, she had to find a way.

Her hand strayed to her pocket and she glanced down in shock as she realised her wand was missing. Magic was no longer of any use to her, though she had given it her whole life. Strange how it now came down to this, to a moment like this one, when even the most cleverest of witches could not use magic to save her own son. Standing up straight, she glared at the monster who used to be a man, standing over her, a leer on his face and his wand raised. She would not cower before him, she would not let him see her fear. He would not take her son without first taking her, regardless of what he offered or promised. She stood tall, hearing Harry cry behind her, and snaked her hand behind her back to hold his protectively. If they were to die, they would die together. Green light once more filled the room and the last thing she felt was her sons hand slipping from hers as she hit the floor.
