Elia Origin: A Historical Journey Through Surname Roots

The surname Elia is an ancient name with many different spellings that originated as an import from the Holy Land to Europe by the "Crusaders". Recorded as Elliss, Elix, Ellice, Eles, Elias, Heelis, and many other forms, it is derived from the Greek "Elias", itself from the Hebrew "Eliyahu" meaning "Jehovah is God". The name became popular among Christians in the Middle Ages, partly because it was adopted by various early saints and martyrs, including a bishop of Syracuse from the 7th century, but mainly as a result of soldiers and pilgrims returning from the Crusades of the 11th and 12th centuries.

These individuals often baptized their children upon their return with names from the Old Testament, in commemoration of their fathers' efforts to liberate the Holy Land from the Saracens. Despite the fact that there were twelve such expeditions and all of them remained unsuccessful, their enthusiasm seemed undiminished. The earliest of all hereditary surnames and their records were found in England, and here we find the first examples of the surname. These include William Elis in the records of the Danelaw of Lincolnshire in 1202 and Robert Elys or Helys, listed in the county of Essex document calendar in 1250. One of the first settlers in the New England colonies was Richard Ellis, 29 years old, who left London on the ship "Bonaventure" sailing to Virginia in January 1634. William Elyas, dating back to 1200, was recorded in the tax returns for the county of Yorkshire during the reign of King John of England, 1199 - 1216. Over the centuries, surnames have continued to "evolve" in all countries, often resulting in astonishing variants of the original spelling.

The name Elia is widespread throughout southern Italy, with a greater concentration in Apulia. Delias, though rare, is distinctly Sardinian. Santelia and the rarer Sant'Elia originate from Campania.

The surname Elia is of Basque origin, meaning "the crowd, the group".
