Musique, ma patrie !
①hello ladies and gentlemen I'm here at my beautiful farm in Austria and it is my pleasure to continue to share with you from here my musical world. 〔it is my pleasure to ~「〜できて嬉しい」〕〔share with you ~「皆さんと〜を共有する」〕〔musical world「音楽世界」〕②you might wonder what could my musical world be when I don't have a music instrument here but actually to the main part of my work as a performing musician not having an instrument with me doesn't really make any difference. 〔you might wonder「〜と思うかもしれない」〕〔what ~ could be「〜とは何なのか」〕〔performing musician「演奏家」〕〔make any difference「違いを生む、影響する」〕③that seems to surprise people. 〔seem to ~「〜のように見える」〕〔surprise people「人を驚かせる」〕④I think there must be some common misunderstanding about how classical music is made how the so-called interpreter goes about his job. 〔there must be ~「〜があるに違いない」〕〔misunderstanding「誤解」〕〔so-called「いわゆる」〕〔interpreter「解釈者」(演奏家を指す)〕〔go about one’s job「仕事を進める」〕⑤some people seem to think that one first learns a piece by taking the score and going to the instrument to try to play the notes as they are written, basically what we call sight reading. 〔some people seem to think that ~「〜と思っているようだ」〕〔learn a piece「曲を学ぶ」〕〔the score「楽譜」〕〔as they are written「書かれている通りに」〕〔sight reading「初見演奏」〕⑥and then he does this a few times and each time it sounds a little better. 〔a few times「数回」〕〔each time「そのたびに」〕⑦eventually, by trial and error he figures out how he wants it to sound according to his taste and what he thinks is right for the piece, and then when he plays a concert he simply reproduces that. 〔eventually「最終的に」〕〔trial and error「試行錯誤」〕〔figure out ~「〜を理解する、見つけ出す」〕〔according to ~「〜に従って」〕〔reproduce「再現する」〕⑧I, as well as many of the colleagues that I know, work rather differently. 〔as well as ~「〜だけでなく」〕〔rather differently「かなり違って」〕⑨when we see a score we are already interpreting. 〔already「すでに」〕〔interpreting「解釈している」〕⑩that is, we are trying to figure out what the music is in terms of content.〔that is「つまり」〕〔in terms of ~「〜の観点から」〕〔content「内容、本質」〕⑪so for example, what is its mood or how does it flow?〔mood「雰囲気、気分」〕〔flow「流れる、展開する」〕⑫we're also trying to figure out how to score works ― that is, what goes with what, which are the important phrases, how are they related to one another, and what are the various characters in the piece, where do they appear and why. 〔how the score works「楽譜がどう機能しているか」〕〔what goes with what「何と何が結びつくか」〕〔important phrases「重要なフレーズ」〕〔related to one another「互いに関係している」〕〔various characters「さまざまな性格・キャラクター」〕⑬so we have a vision of what the piece is trying to say, and we would then perhaps read the piece a few times through, checking that this vision really fits. 〔vision「ヴィジョン、全体像」〕〔what the piece is trying to say「作品が語ろうとしていること」〕〔fits「適合する」〕⑭and at this point, for us, the piece has been replaced by the vision. 〔at this point「この段階で」〕〔be replaced by ~「〜に置き換えられる」〕 ⑮when we think of that worth of music, what we are thinking of is our vision, or interpretation as we might as well call it. 〔work of music「音楽作品」〕〔might as well ~「〜と言ってしまってよい」〕〔interpretation「解釈」〕⑯now taking our instrument and out putting this in sound is just the last step, which most of the time goes pretty much just expected. 〔output ~ in sound「〜を音として表出する」〕〔the last step「最後の段階」〕〔as expected「予想通りに」〕⑰of course, this last step is the only thing that people see, because it is what happens during a concert. 〔of course「もちろん」〕〔during a concert「コンサートの間に」〕⑱there are still many things that can happen at this step, and experience makes a pretty big difference. 〔make a difference「違いを生む」〕⑲I'll talk about that next time, so it's not to confuse matters by overloading the main point. 〔so as not to ~「〜しないように」〕〔confuse matters「話をややこしくする」〕〔overload the main point「主題に情報を詰め込みすぎる」〕⑳here is really how music interpretation comes about as I experience it. 〔main point「主題、核心」〕〔come about「生じる、成立する」〕㉑it's like cooking. 〔like ~「〜のような」〕㉒one is guided by a score, a recipe, which one interprets to become a vision, a mental image of how the whole dish comes into being. 〔be guided by ~「〜に導かれる」〕〔recipe「レシピ」〕〔mental image「心の中のイメージ」〕〔come into being「生まれる、成立する」〕㉓so here is a piece from the early 1500s, in a vision which I consider a little daring.〔from the early 1500s「1500年代初頭の」〕〔daring「大胆な」〕㉔I shall be the first to admit that this is a vision which comes more from me and from my experience as a music lover in today's era than from the score.〔be the first to admit「真っ先に認める」〕〔come from ~「〜から生まれる」〕〔music lover「音楽愛好家」〕〔today’s era「現代という時代」〕 出典元(音声)Preston : upon La Mi Re | Musique, ma patrie !
