    Musique, ma patrie !

①hello ladies and gentlemen in the last days I have tried to share a bit of how I go about making music from the perspective of interpreting a piece.〔go about ~ing「〜に取り組む」〕〔from the perspective of ~「〜の観点から」〕〔interpret a piece「作品を解釈する」〕②but let's look now at the whole thing from another angle. 〔from another angle「別の角度から」〕③what is the act of making music when you're playing a concert? 〔the act of ~ing「〜という行為」〕④what is going on? Well, what you're doing as a musician is filling a period of time and space with sound.〔what is going on?「何が起きているのか」〕〔fill ~ with …「〜を…で満たす」〕〔a period of time and space「ある時間と空間」〕⑤and it is up to you which sounds you use and how you put them together in order to create something meaningful or memorable or beautiful. 〔it is up to you「あなた次第である」〕〔put together「組み合わせる」〕〔meaningful「意味深い」〕〔memorable「記憶に残る」〕⑥the composer is not there. his part is that he has given you an idea of a rough sequence of what you could do that might work. 〔composer「作曲家」〕〔rough sequence「大まかな流れ」〕〔might work「うまく機能するかもしれない」〕⑦that's the composition. and most of the time you can trust it. so what if you engage more with the situation at hand rather than with making the best out of the guidance that someone else who is not present there left for you? 〔engage with ~「〜と関わる」〕〔the situation at hand「目の前の状況」〕〔make the best out of ~「〜を最大限に活かす」〕〔guidance「指針、導き」〕⑧is there perhaps something that you feel in the atmosphere which compels you to send a certain sound into the space? させる」〕〔send a sound into the space「音を空間へ放つ」〕⑨I'd like to share with you one such moment that I personally experienced in a rather unforgettable way. 〔personally experienced「自分自身で体験した」〕〔rather unforgettable「かなり忘れがたい」〕⑩it was a recital in Tokyo, and I played a 6th Plataea of Bach. 〔recital「リサイタル」〕〔Partita「パルティータ」〕⑪and I got to this innocent ending of the air and that silent transition into the next movement, which anyway is one of the most amazing sublime moments in music to live through that I know. 〔get to ~「〜に到達する」〕〔innocent ending「無垢な終わり方」〕〔silent transition「静かな移行」〕〔sublime「崇高な」〕〔live through「実際に体験する」〕⑫and in this next movement, the Sarabande, I felt that there came to be an incredible tension in the air. 〔there came to be ~「〜が生まれてきた」〕〔tension in the air「空気の緊張感」〕⑬perhaps it was only possible because of the silence and attentiveness that characterized the Tokyo audience. 〔attentiveness「注意深さ、集中」〕〔characterize「特徴づける」〕⑭at that point I knew I had to let the atmosphere make the music, in my stand as it were. 〔at that point「その時点で」〕〔in my stead「私の代わりに」〕〔as it were「いわば」〕⑮it told me clearly and intensely when and how to play the next note what shape to give the next wave. 〔intensely「強烈に」〕〔what shape to give ~「〜にどんな形を与えるか」〕〔wave「波、うねり」(ここでは音楽的フレーズ)〕⑯is this how I think this particular piece by Bath should be played no but it was how I felt that that moment in that Hall on that particular day in March wanted to be filled? 〔wanted to be filled「満たされることを求めていた」〕⑰and that can also be what music making is about. 〔be about ~「〜に関わることである」〕⑱there's interpreting a piece in the sense of you're saying honestly: in my view this is what this piece is trying to say.〔in the sense of ~「〜という意味で」〕〔honestly「誠実に」〕〔this piece is trying to say ~「この作品が語ろうとしていること」〕⑲and then there's what happens when a piece inspires you to say something you think is worthwhile to say in the moment. 〔inspire ~ to …「〜に…させる気を起こさせる」〕〔worthwhile「価値がある」〕〔in the moment「その瞬間に」〕⑳I absolutely do not wish to imply that one is good and one is bad. 〔absolutely not「決して〜ない」〕〔imply「暗示する」〕㉑if there's one thing that music really does not need, its dogmatism.〔dogmatism「教条主義」〕㉒all I'm saying is that in my musical experience there have been both of these things. 〔all I'm saying is ~「私が言いたいのは〜だけだ」〕㉓if only for that I'm looking forward to playing concerts again. 〔look forward to ~ing「〜を楽しみにする」〕
