    Musique, ma patrie !

①hello ladies and gentlemen in classical music one is often asked to name a definitive performance of a certain piece. 〔definitive performance「決定版の演奏、決定的演奏」〕〔a certain piece「ある特定の作品」〕 ②it is customary to answer that there is no definitive performance and that there is a variety of performances which are all worthwhile. 〔it is customary to ~「〜するのが慣例である」〕〔a variety of ~「多様な〜」〕〔worthwhile「価値がある」〕③it's a good stonewalling diplomacy which seems like it should offend no one but to me it is a counterproductive answer. 〔stonewalling「はぐらかし、かわし」〕〔diplomacy「外交的態度」〕〔offend no one「誰も傷つけない」〕〔counterproductive「逆効果の」〕④for it does not reveal what I strongly feel about this discussion that it is a wrong question to ask. 〔reveal「明らかにする」〕〔strongly feel「強く感じる」〕〔wrong question「誤った問い」〕⑤this way of talking implies that we have an idea of what a definitive performance should do but we fail because the task is too big. 〔imply「暗に意味する」〕〔what ~ should do「〜が果たすべきこと」〕〔the task is too big「課題が大きすぎる」〕⑥the task being to make a performance of a piece that represents it perfectly in all of its aspects that we judge salient or important. 〔represent perfectly「完璧に表現する」〕〔aspect「側面」〕〔salient「際立った、重要な」〕⑦well, I don't think that this task is what we should strive for. 〔strive for ~「〜を目指して努力する」〕⑧we should accept that composition and performance are two different both valuable areas of artistic endeavor. 〔composition「作曲」〕〔performance「演奏」〕〔artistic endeavor「芸術的営み」〕⑨and that in the performance of the composition by showing one thing we are obscuring another and that that is perfectly fine. 〔obscure「覆い隠す、見えなくする」〕〔perfectly fine「まったく問題ない」〕⑩we do not live in a world where we only ever hear a piece once. 〔only ever ~ once「一度きりしか〜ない」〕⑪you don't expect to read a poem once, never read it again, and understand all of its meaning and all of its allusions. 〔expect to ~「〜を期待する」〕〔allusion「暗示、ほのめかし」〕⑫so why should a performance in music try to transmit all that there is to transmit about a piece in one go? 〔transmit「伝達する」〕〔in one go「一度で、一気に」〕⑬I know that I'm putting myself into dissonance with the whole world of so-called music criticism. 〔put oneself into dissonance with ~「〜と不協和状態に置く」〕〔so-called「いわゆる」〕〔music criticism「音楽批評」〕⑭which operates on the basis that if in a performance there is some element of the work that it does not represent, it is not perfect. 〔operate on the basis that ~「〜という前提で機能する」〕〔element of the work「作品の要素」〕〔not perfect「不完全な」〕⑮for me, there may be a valid criticism for a composition, but not for performance. 〔valid criticism「妥当な批評」〕⑯let's experience each performance for the elements that it does contain. 〔experience ~「〜を体験する、味わう」〕〔contain「含む」〕⑰and if we want to judge, let's ask ourselves if we feel that the performance made those elements worthwhile and satisfying. 〔judge「評価する」〕〔worthwhile and satisfying「価値があり満足できる」〕⑱so when I think, “oh, how I wish this performance would just be a little more this or a little more that, how that would make the whole thing so much more beautiful more perfect or more meaningful” 〔how I wish ~「〜だったらなあ」〕〔a little more this or that「もう少しこう、あるいはああ」〕〔meaningful「意味深い」〕⑲I tell myself: actually that's great. 〔actually「むしろ、実際には」〕⑳I'm now motivated to listen to the piece again to try to find that little thing. 〔be motivated to ~「〜する動機づけを得る」〕〔that little thing「その小さな何か」〕㉑and I just convinced myself of the pieces greater beauty, perfection and meaningfulness, 〔convince oneself of ~「〜を確信する」〕〔greater beauty「より大きな美しさ」〕㉒and that to me is what humility of the interpreter with respect to the composer means. 〔humility「謙虚さ」〕〔with respect to ~「〜に対して」〕〔interpreter「演奏家、解釈者」〕㉓doing something that makes the composer look good, regardless of what you make people think of your own performance. 〔regardless of ~「〜に関係なく」〕〔make someone look good「〜を良く見せる」〕㉔so here's a little piece out of another secret film from a concert I gave. 〔secret film「秘密録音・非公式記録」〕㉕it is, on the face of it, a bad performance because lots of technical stuff went wrong. 〔on the face of it「表面的には」〕〔technical stuff「技術的なこと」〕〔go wrong「うまくいかない」〕㉖but I think it made a piece speak in a memorable way. 〔make the piece speak「作品に語らせる」〕〔memorable「記憶に残る」〕㉗so go look around here for some performance of a piece that you really like, listen to it, and ask yourself: did the performance make you experience and knew your love of the piece? 〔look around for ~「〜を探してみる」〕〔experience anew ~「〜を新たに体験する」〕㉘if so let's call it a good performance. 〔if so「もしそうなら」〕

    (*1)《Musica Ricercata》
