Musique, ma patrie ! #86では、シャルル＝ヴァランタン・アルカン（Charles-Valentin Alkan）の《ソナチネ 第4楽章 Tempo giusto》（＊1）が紹介される。キット・アームストロングは、アルカンの芸術の最も驚くべき特徴とは、古典的で平凡にも見える音楽素材を、単純な操作によって全く異様で恐ろしいものへ変貌させる点にあると述べる。（＊2）この終楽章は決して長大な作品ではないが、その中には極度に凝縮されたエネルギーと暗さが存在している。特別に奇抜な素材を用いているわけではないにもかかわらず、反復や変形を重ねることで、音楽は徐々に不穏な性格を帯びていく。そこでは、古典派的な均衡感覚そのものが内部から歪められていくような感覚が生まれている。ここでの音楽は、既知の形式が未知の精神世界へ転化する過程として提示される。
