Musique, ma patrie !
①hello ladies and gentlemen. I was born in Los Angeles but somehow I think I never really had very much to do with the ocean. 〔was born「生まれた」〕〔somehow「なぜか・不思議なことに」〕〔have to do with ...「〜と関わりがある」〕〔the ocean「海」〕②I probably know more ocean depictions in music than actual oceans. 〔probably「おそらく」〕〔ocean depictions in music「音楽の中の海の描写」〕〔actual oceans「実際の海」〕③nevertheless there is a particular atmosphere which I have felt when in the presence of oceans in islands in the north of Europe which I find again in this piece, which is thereby very evocative to me. 〔nevertheless「それでも」〕〔particular atmosphere「特有の雰囲気」〕〔in the presence of ...「〜の前にいる時・〜に接した時」〕〔find again「再び見いだす」〕〔evocative「喚起的な・印象を呼び起こす」〕④it is also a very interesting exploration of different harmonic paradigms of the beginning of the 20th century. 〔exploration「探究」〕〔harmonic paradigms「和声的パラダイム」〕〔the beginning of the 20th century「20世紀初頭」〕⑤one of them is of course what you could call romantic harmony – basically an extended, chromatically extended tonality or functional harmony, 〔what you could call ...「いわゆる〜」〕〔romantic harmony「ロマン派的和声」〕〔chromatically extended tonality「半音階的に拡張された調性」〕〔functional harmony「機能和声」〕⑥then there was the invention of bitonality, which was one way to break free while still taking advantage of the natural resonances of tones put together.〔bitonality「多調性」〕〔break free「自由になる」〕〔while ...「〜しながら」〕〔take advantage of ...「〜を活用する」〕〔natural resonances「自然な共鳴」〕〔tones put together「組み合わされた音」〕⑦and of course there was free atonality, where each tone stood for itself and was in a sort of equal partnership with all the other eleven tones of the chromatic scale. 〔free atonality「自由無調」〕〔stood for itself「それ自体として存在する」〕〔equal partnership「対等な関係」〕〔chromatic scale「半音階」〕⑧in this piece we have basically two layers. we have the murmuring sea (so it is even written in the score) and,〔basically「基本的に」〕〔layers「層」〕〔murmuring sea「さざめく海」〕〔score「楽譜」〕⑨on top of that, three lines which essentially move in tandem. they are basically harmonic within themselves, but often dissonant within the context. 〔on top of that「その上に」〕〔lines「旋律線・声部」〕〔move in tandem「並行して動く・連動する」〕〔harmonic「和声的な」〕〔within themselves「それ自体の内部では」〕〔dissonant「不協和な」〕〔within the context「文脈の中では」〕⑩that is, they are dissonant to the background. and this is what gives this piece three dimensionality, for it creates distance between the various planes.〔that is「つまり」〕〔background「背景」〕〔give ... dimensionality「〜に次元性を与える」〕〔three dimensionality「三次元性」〕〔create distance「距離を生み出す」〕〔various planes「さまざまな層・平面」〕 出典元(音声)Baines : Goodnight to Flamboro' | Musique, ma patrie !
