    Musique, ma patrie !

①hello ladies and gentlemen. I'm sure you all know Grieg's wedding day March it's a jolly good tune and a good jolly tune.〔I'm sure (that)「〜だと思う」〕〔you all know「皆さん知っている」〕〔jolly good「とても楽しい」〕②It goes like this. well, that's not how grieg played it and it's also not how he wrote it.〔go like this「こういうふうに進む/鳴る」〕〔that's not how...「それは〜のやり方ではない」〕〔also「〜でもある」〕〔how he wrote it「彼がどう書いたか」〕③as I said yesterday I'd very much like to, this week, show you a few examples of where tradition has diverged from a composers original intentions. 〔as I said「言ったように」〕〔I'd like to「〜したい」〕〔diverge from「〜から逸れる」〕〔intentions「意図」〕④And I will repeat this every time because otherwise the risk of misunderstanding is too great: it is not to say one is right and one is wrong. 〔otherwise「そうしないと」〕〔risk of「〜のリスク」〕〔it is not to say...「〜と言いたいわけではない」〕⑤indeed I have the greatest respect for traditions of all eras. so why am i doing this?〔indeed「実際に/むしろ強調」〕〔the greatest respect「最大の敬意」〕⑥well, I must admit that I probably wouldn't be doing this with this piece 〔I must admit that「認めざるを得ない」〕〔仮定的ニュアンス wouldn't be doing〕⑦if there weren't something about what I perceive to be Grieg's original intentions which I actually find curiously attractive, even if I may not do them exactly like this in concert. 〔仮定法 if there weren't「もし〜でなければ」〕〔what I perceive to be「私が〜だと認識するもの」〕〔which(前の内容を受ける)〕〔curiously「不思議と」〕〔even if「たとえ〜でも」〕〔may not「〜しないかもしれない」〕⑧so what's the difference? ⑨for one, it is faster and it's in pedal. in essence, it's blurrier. 〔for one「まず一つ目」〕〔in pedal「ペダルありで」〕〔in essence「本質的には」〕⑩let's think about visual art, let's think about the painting of the era and furthermore let's think about what kind of painting a man like Grieg could have liked.〔furthermore「さらに」〕〔could have liked(好んでいた可能性)〕⑪it's probably a kind of painting with soft contours and a kind of impressionistic luminosity, isn't it? 〔probably「おそらく」〕〔付加疑問 isn't it?〕⑫the second thing is about the rhythm. instead of ending every phrase like this, what we actually should be doing according to the accents written in Grieg's score is: let's try that〔the second thing(二つ目)〕〔instead of「〜の代わりに」〕〔what we should be doing is...「本来すべきことは〜」〕〔according to「〜によれば」〕
