    Musique, ma patrie !

①hello ladies and gentlemen. today I'd like to take you on an unusual journey of composition. let's start here with this:...〔I'd like to + 動詞「〜したい」〕〔take you on「〜へ連れて行く」〕〔unusual「珍しい」〕〔let's + 動詞「〜しよう」〕〔start「始める」〕②this is going to be our toolbox it's going to contain all the elements that we will use to build a musical composition.〔be going to「〜する予定」〕〔toolbox「道具箱(比喩)」〕〔contain「含む」〕〔elements「要素」〕③the unusual thing about this toolbox is that it does not have clearly defined tools.〔the unusual thing「変わった点」〕〔clearly defined「明確に定義された」〕④this piece of music does not have clearly defined phrases and it's quite unusual in that it's going to be treated in a way that chops itself up into different fragments, at places that we don't really expect.〔does not have「持たない」〕〔phrases「フレーズ」〕〔be treated「扱われる」〕〔chop up「切り分ける」〕〔fragments「断片」〕⑤and when we chop it up in this way we're going to get fragments which we would not even recognise at first glance.〔at first glance「一見して」〕〔recognise「認識する」〕⑥for example, did you hear this in the tune? well let me show you where it is:〔did you hear「聞き取れましたか」〕〔let me + 動詞「〜させてください」〕⑦of course this is not a natural division but it gives us an interesting possibility to develop:〔of course「もちろん」〕〔natural division「自然な区切り」〕〔possibility「可能性」〕⑧we can also do another thing with it we can turn it around we can invert it and invent a piece of music based on that〔turn around / invert「反転する/転回する」〕〔based on「〜に基づいて」〕⑨now let's do something which music always needs and that is "space filling"〔which music always needs(関係節)〕〔space filling「空間充填(比喩)」〕⑩we can call it a kind of tiling.〔call A B「AをBと呼ぶ」〕⑪in music we call it sequence.〔sequence「反復進行」〕⑫this basically just means some little piece of music that we can repeat over and over again at regular intervals.〔basically「基本的に」〕〔over and over again「何度も」〕〔at regular intervals「一定間隔で」〕⑬now did you see where the motive of this sequence comes from?〔motive「モティーフ」〕〔come from「〜に由来する」〕⑭let me show you in our toolbox. now we can also take bigger chunks of our toolbox〔let me show you「お見せしましょう」〕〔chunks「かたまり」〕⑮let's take the whole of its first line and chop it into three segments and let's do the following〔the whole of「全体」〕〔segments「区分」〕⑯we have the first fragment here played by the right hand and then we put the first fragment played by the left hand〔played by(受動)〕⑰then we have the second fragment played by the right hand the second fragment played by the left hand and then the third fragment〔then「次に」〕⑱this is one way to chop it up, and it's quite unexpected in the sense that each of the divisions comes at a place we don't expect one to be, because it's not in the middle of a phrase break.〔in the sense that「〜という意味で」〕〔phrase break「フレーズの切れ目」〕⑲now let's continue with the treatment of toolbox, with the second line which goes like this〔continue with「〜を続ける」〕⑳that's an interesting little bit〔little bit「小さな部分」〕㉑so let's do the following:㉒let's put something else with it and then we'll try to do also this same kind of thing right hand plays it, left hand plays it, right hand plays it〔put A with B「AをBと組み合わせる」〕㉓now you might notice that we've actually created another sequence, because we can do this indefinitely and each time it moves it on one note.〔might notice「気づくかもしれない」〕〔indefinitely「無限に」〕㉔so we are creating a tiling of musical space.〔creating「作り出している」〕㉕we can actually chop this up in another way which makes another sequence. now did you hear:... here it is〔another way「別の方法」〕㉖now let's just paste this onto many copies of itself and there we have another sequence〔paste onto「貼り付ける」〕㉗and at the end of all this we hear the whole toolbox presented in its entirety once again〔in its entirety「全体として」〕㉘and then, even though it's – let's face it – an awkward tune which is a kind of unnatural putting-together of various bits, not all of which are particularly catchy,〔even though「〜だけれども」〕〔let's face it「正直に言えば」〕〔awkward「ぎこちない」〕〔catchy「耳に残る」〕㉙but after having gone through all these little fragmentations and treating little bits that are chopped off from this toolbox〔after having + 過去分詞「〜した後で」〕〔fragmentations「断片化」〕㉚the funny thing is that this toolbox actually becomes very memorable and it's incredibly satisfying at the end and really exhilarating to hear it presented in full.〔the funny thing is that「興味深いことに」〕〔memorable「記憶に残る」〕〔satisfying「満足感のある」〕〔exhilarating「爽快な」〕
