    Musique, ma patrie !

①Hello ladies and gentlemen. This week we are talking about flow.〔this week「今週」〕〔talk about ...「〜について話す」〕〔flow「流れ・流動性」〕②Now, flowing music can be thought of in many different ways. There's one kind which is a series of ideas, of distinct things that one says in music, which follow one after another, on and on. 〔can be thought of「〜と考えられる」〕〔in many different ways「さまざまな方法で」〕〔there's one kind which ...「〜のような一種がある」〕〔a series of ...「〜の連続」〕〔distinct things「はっきり区別されたもの」〕〔one after another「次々に」〕〔on and on「延々と」〕③But let's think of another kind of flow, of flow in sound. It's about the continuity of many things happening all the time, of little things happening, of sound changes, of sound events which form together to give the impression of a general texture, and which make it seem like it's the sound itself which is flowing.〔let's think of ...「〜について考えてみよう」〕〔flow in sound「音の中の流れ」〕〔continuity「連続性」〕〔sound events「音の出来事」〕〔form together「一緒になって形作る」〕〔give the impression of ...「〜という印象を与える」〕〔texture「テクスチュア・音響の織物」〕〔make it seem like ...「〜のように感じさせる」〕④So when did this come about? I think a major step towards it was taken in the period known as the subtilior, around 1400.〔come about「生じる・現れる」〕〔a major step「大きな一歩」〕〔towards it「それに向けて」〕〔was taken「取られた・踏み出された」〕〔known as ...「〜として知られる」〕〔subtilior「アルス・スブティリオール(中世後期の高度様式)」〕⑤It became much more common in polyphony to strive for fluidity.〔it became common to ...「〜することが一般的になる」〕〔polyphony「ポリフォニー・多声音楽」〕〔strive for ...「〜を目指す」〕〔fluidity「流動性」〕⑥One technique of doing this is to see to it that at every moment in time there is something going on in one of the voices and in consequence to see to it that every time a voice is doing something, the other voices were not doing nothing.〔one technique of doing this「そのためのひとつの技法」〕〔see to it that ...「…するように取り計らう」〕〔at every moment in time「どの瞬間にも」〕〔voices「声部」〕〔in consequence「その結果として」〕⑦By doing this, we have a set of lines which all make sense in and of themselves with their own rhythms, but which combined create a continuous acoustic movement.〔by doing this「こうすることで」〕〔a set of lines「複数の旋律線」〕〔make sense in and of themselves「それ自体で意味を成す」〕〔combined「結び合わさって」〕〔continuous acoustic movement「連続的な音響運動」〕⑧Strange as it may seem, I think this might be one of the first pieces ever written to exhibit that. It is quite naive in expression, but it is beautiful.〔strange as it may seem「奇妙に思えるかもしれないが」〕〔might be「〜かもしれない」〕〔one of the first ... ever written「これまで書かれた最初期の〜のひとつ」〕〔exhibit「示す・表す」〕〔naive「素朴な」〕〔in expression「表現において」〕
