The Fist and the Knife Hand (4): “Ki” and the Knife Hand
To be honest, the knife hand is more difficult than the fist.
In Aikido, the knife hand is used to strike the opponent while the fingers are spread and one projects ki centered through the middle finger, but this “ki” is a rather tricky thing to deal with.
Sometimes a dan-ranked practitioner cautions me, “Your ki isn’t extending forward.”
Come to think of it, when I was a beginner, I once asked a dan-ranked practitioner who had worked with me in paired practice a question.
“When striking with a knife hand, what exactly should I aim at from the hand, and what color of ki should I project?”
“Ha ha ha. Ki isn’t the same as a laser beam. …Well, it’s really a matter of image.”
He laughed, but this “image” is exactly what makes it difficult.
These days, I try to apply techniques while keeping the image of a white light extending straight from my tanden—my lower abdomen—through my hand… but is that really the right way?
As for the knife-hand form itself, with the fingers spread, it works fairly well when I am acting as uke—the one receiving the technique—and going in to strike with a knife hand myself.
But when I am acting as tori—the one applying the technique—and I have to parry my partner’s knife hand with a knife hand of my own, if the attack comes whipping in with force, I carelessly end up using a karate-style knife hand instead—the kind with the fingers held tightly together and the palm bent slightly inward—and then an older dan-ranked practitioner scolds me: “Hey! Your knife hand has turned into karate again!”
When I was a child, circumstances forced me to learn self-defense techniques on my own for the purpose of “hitting people in order to protect myself,” and because I incorporated many karate movements at that time, my self-taught style naturally moves in ways that resemble karate.
During Aikido practice, I have to move in an Aikido way, but the moment I let my guard down, I slip right back into my old self-taught movements.
The dojo I attend has an atmosphere that is tolerant of other martial arts, so there are many people there who hold dan ranks in Aikido and also dan ranks in other arts such as karate, judo, kendo, and iaido.
Thanks to that, even a rebel like me is allowed to remain a member there.
Even so, the knife hand, the jo forms, the way of projecting ki… there is a mountain of issues I have to solve before reaching dan rank, and from time to time I find myself sighing.
Ah, the road to dan rank is still a long one.
