The Air Conditioner Set at 30 Degrees and What My Body Is Teaching Me ## Wednesday, July 15, 2026 (Reiwa8)

Today was a curious day.

In the morning, I read the Ehime Shimbun newspaper.

Once again, one of my submissions related to the economy was selected.

I do not even know whether it has been five days in a row or six days in a row.

But honestly, rather than feeling happy, I feel a little surprised.

I am not an expert in economics.

I still do not fully understand things like stocks and exchange rates.

I simply write about things that make me wonder, "What exactly is this?" because I do not know.

Perhaps there are other people in the world, like me, who think, "I do not understand it, but I want to learn."

When I think about that, I feel that maybe my writing has a little meaning.

---

Yesterday, because of the heat, I used an air conditioner for the first time.

I have always been very sensitive to cold.

When I lived in Shizuoka and slept in the same room as my husband, whenever he turned on the air conditioner, I would say,

"It's cold, it's cold."

My husband would say, "I guess I have no choice," and raise the temperature or reduce the cooling.

Even though my husband slept wearing almost nothing, I wrapped myself in a towel blanket or a thin blanket.

That is the kind of person I am, yet yesterday I finally gave in to the heat in Matsuyama and turned on the air conditioner.

However, even at 29 degrees Celsius, I felt cold.

Even at 29.5 degrees, I felt cold.

Finally, I set it to 30 degrees.

I laughed to myself and thought,

"Can this really be called cooling?"

But my body feels more comfortable this way, so there is nothing wrong with it.

I also turned on a fan, placing it a little distance away from me.

When I switched to dehumidifying mode, it somehow felt even colder.

When I changed it to fan mode, it finally became somewhat comfortable.

Air conditioners have many functions, such as cooling, dehumidifying, fan mode, and automatic mode, but the numbers alone do not tell the whole story.

I realized that what matters most is how my own body feels.

---

Today, my right elbow felt itchy.

My left hand has been itchy for some time, and I feel that it has gradually been recovering.

But this time, even my right hand felt itchy.

Suddenly, I had a thought.

"Could it be because I have not aired out my bedding for such a long time?"

So I decided to air out my bedding and wash my sheets.

Fortunately, I have an extra set of sheets that my husband prepared.

I will hang them out to dry, and then I plan to visit Bethel Hospital next door.

A painting exhibition by the daughter of the entertainer Tomochika is being held in the chapel on the second floor.

Usually, it is open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., but today it started at 3:00 p.m.

I hope to go and take a quick look before mealtime.

I would like to see it, even if only for a short while.

---

Recently, I wrote the kanji character "kaiho" (快方: getting better, improving).

Using a brush I bought at a 100-yen shop, I practiced two or three times and wrote it.

It is not a beautiful piece of calligraphy.

But I wanted to write that word.

I feel that my wish at this moment became that one character.

To gradually become free from pain.

To gradually regain movement in my arm.

To be able to enjoy many things again, just as I did before.

"Heading toward recovery."

I wanted to write those words with my own hand and keep them as a record.

I use the air conditioner at 30 degrees, wondering, "Is this really cooling?"

But perhaps this, too, is something my body is teaching me right now.

Without pushing myself too hard, while listening to my body's voice, I hope to continue moving little by little toward recovery.
