Ehime Shimbun's Business Section Is Something Even I Can Read - July 1, 2026 (Wed) Reiwa8
Today, I read the business section of the Ehime Shimbun again.
In the past, I would often close the newspaper as soon as I saw economic news because it looked too difficult. Newspapers like the Nikkei contain so much detailed information that I never knew where to begin. It felt beyond my ability.
However, after moving into Eden no Sono, I started picking up the Ehime Shimbun that is available in the first-floor lounge.
The business section is not very large, and that is exactly what makes it manageable for me.
At first, I only looked at numbers such as exchange rates and the Nikkei Stock Average.
Recently, however, the way I read the news has changed.
"Why did stock prices rise today?"
"Why did Nitori's shares fall?"
"Why did a company's stock price decline even though its profits increased?"
I have begun asking myself these kinds of questions.
Today's newspaper explained that AI-related stocks were bought actively, while retail and food-related stocks were sold.
I also learned that a weaker yen can benefit export-oriented companies such as Toyota, while it can hurt companies like Zojirushi, which import many parts and materials from overseas.
The same event - a weaker yen - can have completely different effects depending on the company.
That made me realize that economics does not have just one answer. The same situation can be viewed differently depending on the business and the people involved.
Another article that caught my attention explained how investment in South Korea's semiconductor industry can influence Japanese stock prices.
The economy is connected not only within Japan, but with the rest of the world.
When I think about it that way, I feel that behind the numbers in the newspaper are the movements of people, businesses, and the global economy.
There are still many words and concepts I do not understand.
Even so, I enjoy looking them up one by one as I read.
Some time ago, I realized that the business section is not simply about numbers; it is about understanding the movements of people.
Today, I felt that idea become even clearer.
