Reflections on Human Connections and Daily LifeDate: June 14, 2026 (Sunday) R8
Human connections are truly mysterious. The people we meet and the relationships we build can greatly shape our daily lives.
At Matsuyama Eden no Sono, where I now live, there are approximately 160 residents. Each month, notices are posted informing us of the passing of someone in the community. Since I have only recently moved here, my experience is still limited, but there were such notices in April and May, and another funeral was held yesterday. It was the second funeral held in June. Since moving here, it was also the first time I had witnessed a Christian wake, funeral service, and departure ceremony within the community.
I was told that the resident had a pacemaker and had lived independently in the self-supporting residence for many years. I also heard that the person was a Christian. Having been well known by many residents, the individual was accompanied by numerous friends, neighbors, and staff members who gathered to say their final farewell.
Life here brings together people with many different lifestyles. Some residents are people I meet only in the bath. Others mostly cook for themselves and keep to their own routines. Some are acquaintances with whom I exchange only a few words, while others have become companions at the mahjong table.
Even though we live in the same community, the distance between people varies greatly. Yet each person seems to be finding their own place, their own enjoyment, and their own way of living.
All of us are moving, little by little, toward the end of life. I do not know whether there is anyone who feels no fear of death at all. However, I believe there is value in accepting that reality and continuing to ask what we can do with the time we have. In that sense, I feel that this is a good environment in which to face aging and continue living with purpose.
During my husband's stay, we were able to enjoy several local attractions together, including Matsuyama Castle, the Botchan Train, and Dogo Onsen. We rode trains and buses and spent time experiencing a different rhythm from everyday life.
Today is the final day of his visit. We have no special plans, but I hope we can spend the day quietly, peacefully, and together.
