Hospital Diary 11 ー I Chose the Place I Call Home – June 27, 2026 (Sat.)R8

After being discharged from the hospital, I returned to Eden and found myself reflecting on many things.
After teaching for two years in Osaka, I spent the next thirty-one years as a teacher in Shizuoka.
Of course, it wasn't that I had no happy memories there.
I have many memories of my students and of raising my children.
But when I looked back on my life, I realized that I had never wanted to spend the rest of my life in Shizuoka.
That is why I came to Matsuyama.
I had no special connection to this city.
While searching for a private senior residence with nursing care, I chose this place for practical reasons, including affordability.
It was a residence that accepted only independent residents at the time of admission and promised care through the end of life.
Now, however, when I return to this room, I truly feel, "This is my home."
My husband still lives in Shizuoka.
Even if he were to become seriously ill in the future, I have no intention of moving back to Shizuoka to live there.
Some people may think that sounds cold.
But it is a decision I reached after many years of living my own life.
Of course, if we need to sell the house that we own together, or if there are responsibilities that only I can fulfill, I will return to Shizuoka.
Other than that, I do not plan to go back.
I did not simply leave Shizuoka.
I chose the place where I want to spend the rest of my life.
Today, after returning home from the hospital, I felt that more strongly than ever.
