The Zigzags of Stock Prices Were the Shape of People's Hopes for the Future — What I Learned from the Economic Section of the Ehime Shimbun at Age 68 — July 11, 2026 (Saturday) Reiwa8

    ## I Could Not Understand Stock Prices by Looking Only at the Present

Today, I read the economic section of the Ehime Shimbun again.

In the past, when I looked at stock prices, I only focused on the numbers: "It went up" or "It went down."

However, as I have gradually continued reading the newspaper, I have started to realize that behind stock prices are the thoughts, expectations, and predictions of many people.

Stocks do not move only based on current results.

They move based on the question:

"What do people think will happen in the future?"

Those hopes and worries appear as numbers.

    ## Summer Heat Can Also Move Stock Prices

    Today's article discussed summer products.

In June, sales of summer clothing and other seasonal items did not grow because of unstable weather and typhoons.

However, as the rainy season ends and temperatures rise, demand may increase for:

    - Short-sleeved clothing
    - Soft drinks
    - Heatstroke prevention products

    At that moment, I thought:

"Can even the weather affect stock prices?"

    Heat, cold, and heavy rain.

Things that seem like simple natural events can change people's buying behavior, affect company sales, and eventually influence stock prices.

I realized that the economy is deeply connected to human life itself.

    ## I Had Forgotten the Importance of the Shipping Industry

I thought about the shipping stocks mentioned in yesterday's article.

When living an ordinary life in Japan, it feels as if things simply arrive whenever we need them.

However, many products and raw materials that come from overseas are transported by ships.

Iron ore used to make steel.

Crude oil and natural gas used as energy sources.

Container cargo such as clothing and household electronics.

Our daily lives are supported by the shipping industry in ways we often cannot see.

I used to feel that everything could be transported by airplanes, but ships are essential for carrying large and heavy goods.

Looking at stock prices is also a way of understanding what role a company plays in society.

    ## Small Components Supporting the AI Era

Today's article also mentioned Murata Manufacturing.

When I first heard the word "AI," I mainly imagined large computers and software.

    But in reality:

    AI requires servers to operate.

    Those servers require electronic components.

They also require communication-related parts and infrastructure.

The future technology called AI is built through the support of many different companies.

I felt that I was beginning to understand why electronic component manufacturers like Murata Manufacturing attract attention.

    ## What I Thought About the Article on Seven & i Holdings

The article about Seven & i Holdings was also interesting.

The company reported increased profits in its financial results.

Even so, its stock price fell.

The reason is that investors do not look only at whether a company made profits today.

    They also consider:

"Will this company continue to grow in the future?"

    I remembered my husband saying:

"Recently, Lawson and FamilyMart seem to have more energy than Seven."

The changes we feel as consumers and the changes investors see through numbers are not always the same.

Even for the same company, what we see depends on our perspective.

    ## The Zigzags of Stock Prices Were the Shape of Human Feelings

Today, I followed the movement of the Nikkei Stock Average.

It rose significantly in the morning.

After that, it moved up and down several times.

In the past, I would have wondered:

"Why does it move so much in such a small way?"

But now I understand a little more.

There are people who buy because they believe prices will rise.

There are people who sell to secure their profits.

There are people who wait because it is the weekend.

The zigzags of stock prices are the shape of people's expectations, worries, and decisions.

    ## Learning About the Economy Since the Age of 68

    The economy is complicated.

Weather, international affairs, people's emotions, trends, and technological changes.

    Many different factors are connected.

That is why it is impossible to predict the future perfectly.

However, by reading the newspaper, I can think about:

"Why did this company's stock price rise?"

"Why was this company's stock sold?"

The economic studies I began at the age of 68 are not only about increasing my knowledge of stocks.

They have become a way to understand how society moves and what people are hoping for.

I am beginning to look forward to reading tomorrow's newspaper as well.
