What I Noticed While Looking at the Ingredients of Miso Soup — 2026/5/18 (Mon) R8
While waiting a long time at the orthopedic clinic next to Eden,
I found myself reviewing the May menu.
I could not read everything,
so I looked only at the ingredients of the soups—
miso soup, clear soup, and light broths.
Wakame, mozuku, mekabu, tororo kombu, aosa.
Tofu, yuba, egg tofu, hanpen, fu.
Enoki, shimeji, nameko, Chinese cabbage, daikon, winter melon.
Spinach, komatsuna, broccoli, tomato.
Somen, harusame, sweet potato.
As I read, I noticed something.
Every one of these becomes soft when cooked.
Every one is gentle on the stomach and slips down easily.
Then my eyes stopped.
Broccoli in miso soup.
I was honestly surprised.
Somewhere inside me,
a fixed idea had quietly formed:
“These are the proper ingredients for miso soup.”
Daikon, wakame, tofu, aburaage, green onion, nameko…
Years of standing in the kitchen
had created a certain “shape” in my mind.
And yet, I realized I had already encountered it once before.
Broccoli miso soup had been served here before,
and I had eaten it.
I was surprised then, too,
but I remember that it was very delicious.
That memory came back to me as I looked at the menu.
When I think about it calmly,
miso soup is simply
dashi, miso, and vegetables that become soft.
That is all.
If it tastes good, anything can go in.
Spinach miso soup is common.
Komatsuna is also common.
So broccoli is not strange at all.
It becomes soft, it is nutritious,
its color is beautiful, and it has no strong taste.
This is not a “strange” miso soup.
It may be a “well-considered” miso soup.
I finish every bowl of soup completely.
Some days I skip lunch,
and yet my weight has increased by one to two kilograms.
I used to think I was eating.
Now I feel that the food is actually entering my body.
Just by looking at the ingredients of miso soup,
I noticed a change in my body.
When a fixed idea loosens,
sometimes the body understands it first.
