The Day I Saw the Minimum Set of Appliances Needed to Live Alone 2026/5/11 (Mon) R8

Today, my washing machine and refrigerator arrived.
With that, the essential appliances in this room are finally complete.

The washing machine is a top-loading type, 6.0 kg capacity.
After many years of using a drum-style washer, it felt a little unfamiliar,
but I chose it after thinking carefully about the space and the way I will live from now on.

I washed ten days’ worth of laundry all at once:
bedsheets, pillowcases, and T-shirts I had been washing by hand.
The drum filled up perfectly.
When I hung everything out to dry, it all fit neatly into the drying space.

I found myself thinking,
“So this is about how much there is in one person’s daily life.”

When choosing the refrigerator, I first tried to pick the smallest one.
But the store clerk stopped me.
If it is too small, frost builds up inside, and defrosting becomes very troublesome, he said.
I had never even considered that.
I had only ever used large refrigerators meant for a family of four.

In the end, I chose a 160-liter model that does not accumulate frost.
Even though I only need space for drinks, some fruit, and a few frozen items,
I later realized that I had chosen a size that would not add extra work to my life.

Both the washing machine and the refrigerator
were not luxuries, but tools to make daily living lighter.

Today, with these appliances in place,
I felt as if I could clearly see the “minimum unit” necessary for one person to live.

I do not need many things.
But I do not want to increase the amount of effort in my life.

Today was the day that boundary became clear.
