Music Memories Found Through Zumba ー 2026/6/10(Wednesday)R8
Yesterday, during my trial visit to FITTA Matsuyama, I joined a Zumba Gold class.
The Zumba classes I attended in the past were usually fast-paced and filled with Spanish songs. I was so busy following the instructor’s movements that I rarely paid attention to the song titles or lyrics.
This time was different.
The pace was slower, and some of the songs were familiar. There were even Japanese songs mixed in with the music.
Two songs especially caught my attention. One was the original song behind Hiromi Go’s “GOLDFINGER ’99,” and the other was a song by Michael Jackson.
After returning home, I looked up the lyrics and was surprised.
The original song behind “GOLDFINGER ‘99” was a passionate love song. Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” tells the story of a man insisting that a child is not his, despite a woman’s claim.
While dancing, I had never thought about the meanings of the lyrics. It reminded me that people often dance to the rhythm and energy of a song rather than its message.
Michael Jackson was the same age as I am.
When I was younger, I listened to many of his songs. I especially remember enjoying “Beat It.”
Over the years, he became one of the world’s biggest stars. His appearance changed dramatically, and his life was often surrounded by controversy and public attention.
When he passed away, I remember feeling shocked.
Then, this morning, while reading the newspaper, I noticed an article about a new movie based on Michael Jackson’s life.
Yesterday I heard his music in a Zumba class, and today I read about a movie connected to him.
It was probably just a coincidence, but it felt like an interesting connection.
A simple fitness class unexpectedly led me back to memories of music, youth, and a different period of my life.
Perhaps that is one of the pleasures of growing older—discovering unexpected links between the present and the past.
