Expensive Does Not Always Mean Better - What I Learned from Bleach and Cosmetics - July 14, 2026 (Tuesday) Reiwa8

## "What Is the Difference?"

For many years, I have wondered about something every time I visit a drugstore.

The shelves are filled with products that seem very similar, yet their prices range from about 100 yen to several thousand yen.

"What exactly is the difference?"

That question has stayed with me whenever I shop.

## Learning the Difference Between Bleaches

My curiosity began while cleaning my kitchen.

As I was using laundry bleach to clean the sink drain parts, I started wondering, "How is kitchen bleach different?"

After looking into it, I learned that both products use sodium hypochlorite as their main ingredient. The biggest difference is their intended purpose and ease of use.

Kitchen bleach is designed to remove slippery residue more easily and often comes in forms, such as foam, that cling well to kitchen surfaces.

I was surprised to discover that they were not completely different products after all.

## Perhaps Cosmetics Are Similar

Then I realized that cosmetics may be much the same.

Some are very expensive, while others can be bought at a 100-yen shop.

I have been using the same lotion for many years, and recently I have also been using an inexpensive Hatomugi lotion from a 100-yen store to help with dry skin.

Of course, expensive cosmetics may contain advanced ingredients and represent years of research.

However, being expensive does not necessarily mean they are the best choice for me.

I have come to believe that what matters most is finding products that suit my skin and that I enjoy using every day.

## Choosing What Fits Me, Not What Costs More

Now that I am 68 years old, I see things differently.

When I was younger, I often assumed that the more expensive something was, the better it must be.

Today, I believe that the most important thing is to choose products that suit me and that I can continue using comfortably.

Whether it is bleach or cosmetics, I have learned that it is more important to understand the real differences than to judge a product simply by its name or its price.

Everyday questions often lead to unexpected discoveries.

Perhaps that is why I still enjoy learning something new, even today.
