Bridging Cultures: Baylor Students Explore Japan’s Akiu Region with Tohoku University.

On May 28, 2025, a group of Baylor University students on a study trip across Japan had the opportunity to visit the beautiful Akiu region near Sendai. During their time in the city, they worked closely with Tohoku University, with support from the Global Learning Center (GLC) and Intercultural Collaborative Learning (ICL).

This visit was part of a collaborative project between Tohoku University and the Akiu Council, aiming to not only offer students a cultural experience but also to help shape future tourism ideas for the area.

    A Local Lunch with Heart

Our first stop was Akiusha, a cozy local restaurant known for serving meals made with fresh vegetables from the region. The warm interior was decorated with beautiful traditional Japanese ornaments hanging from the ceiling, some of which are said to be original and preserved for generations. The food was fresh and flavorful, and the calm atmosphere made it a great place to start our journey.

    Painting Kokeshi Dolls

After lunch, we visited a traditional Kokeshi doll workshop. The place felt like a small village, with buildings dedicated to local crafts. We each got to paint our own Kokeshi doll using natural colors, mainly red, black, and pink. It was a peaceful, creative activity, and we got to take our handmade dolls home as souvenirs.

    Spiritual Stop at Akiu Shrine

Next, we headed to Akiu Shrine, a spiritual site popular with students, athletes, and couples. People come here to pray for good results in exams, sports victories, or even love. Surrounded by tall trees, the shrine had a peaceful atmosphere, and we took a few moments to quietly make our wishes.

Akiu Otaki Waterfalls and a Heart-Shaped Rock

One of the most scenic parts of the visit was the Akiu Otaki Waterfall, considered one of Japan’s three most beautiful waterfalls. Surrounded by forest, it was a stunning sight, especially in early summer with all the greenery.

We also walked to Rairakyo Gorge, where there’s a naturally heart-shaped rock that’s known as the “Holy Place for Lovers.” People throw 10 yen coins, hoping they land inside the heart. If they do, it’s said their love life will flourish!

    Learning Resilience at Akiu Winery

The final stop was Akiu Winery, where we met the founder and heard the inspiring story behind it. After the 2011 earthquake, much of the area, including its wine industry, was badly affected. But the community came together to rebuild.

The winery uses local grapes and follows the concept of “terroir and terrorage”, French terms that describe how soil, climate, and topography affect wine. They also pair their wines with local dishes to showcase the region’s unique flavors.

    Reflections and Future Ideas

At the end of the project, Baylor students shared their thoughts and suggestions with the Akiu Council on how to make the area even more appealing to international visitors. Their input was well-received and appreciated.

For Tohoku University and its partners, this was more than just a field trip, it was a chance to explore future collaborations that connect culture, education, and tourism in meaningful ways.
