映画『The Devil Wears Prada』の続編『The Devil Wears Prada 2』を観て、ひとつのことを考えました。
After watching the sequel to The Devil Wears Prada, I found myself thinking about something unexpected.
What we see on screen is the very peak of high fashion—a world that constantly asks what beauty truly is, beyond trends. Miranda’s words carry a strong sense of responsibility and pride toward that idea of beauty.
I began to wonder: if she were involved in the Shikinen Sengu, what kind of perspective—and what kind of words—would she offer?

When we think of the Shikinen Sengu, we often focus on the rebuilding of shrine buildings. But there is another important pillar: the sacred garments and treasures.
These are the garments, furnishings, and ornaments offered to the kami—each one newly created for the ritual.
This is not simple replacement. Craftspeople today recreate each item by hand, preserving techniques and forms that have been passed down for over 1,300 years.
⸻
The essence of these sacred items is not just making objects, but passing on both skill and spirit.
Each piece involves many crafts—textiles, metalwork, woodworking, lacquer. These are skills refined over generations, beyond the span of a single lifetime.
The 20-year cycle also serves as a perfect rhythm to keep these traditions alive without interruption.
⸻
Here, we begin to see a connection with the world of high fashion.
True beauty is not born from mass production. It emerges through time, care, and attention to even the unseen details.
Miranda’s idea that “this is not just a piece of clothing” may resonate with the meaning of these sacred items.
⸻
Most of these sacred items are rarely seen by the public.
Yet they are carefully made and passed down. The act itself holds value.
Finding meaning not only in what is visible, but also in what is unseen—this is one of the defining qualities of Japanese culture.
⸻
If Miranda were to see this world, she might say something like this:
“This is not fashion. It is time itself.”
The Shikinen Sengu and its sacred garments renew their form while preserving their essence.
Perhaps it also quietly asks something of how we choose to live our own lives.
