"The Earth was blue..."
This is a famous quote from the astronaut Gagarin when he looked at the Earth, and I understand the Earth's oceans. But I used to wonder, since there are so many mountains, wouldn't it have been blue and green?
At that time, I found making things more fun than studying, so I tried my hand at everything. Among them, I was most enthusiastic about patchwork.
I mainly liked to copy the scenery of fields and mountains that I had taken in photos. Like the lavender fields of Furano, for example.
When I drew the sketches for my patchwork using photos as a reference, the fields, trees, and mountains, which should have been green, would turn increasingly blue the further away they were, until eventually they assimilated with the sky. I found that so mysterious, so very mysterious.
The sheer variety of greens is incredible. What does it mean for a blue gradation to envelop all those greens?
Back then, there were no computers, and of course, I couldn't surf the internet, so researching it meant going to the library, which was a bit of a hassle, so I just left it at that.
With the theme of "Blue Gradation," I remembered this story, and 50 years later, I finally looked it up...
It seems that distant mountains and trees look blue because the "air" between the mountains and our eyes scatters blue light. This phenomenon is called "Rayleigh scattering," and as the distance increases, the layer of air becomes thicker, causing the blue to deepen.
The "blue gradation" created by the fields, hills, trees, and the layers of mountains stretching from the foreground to the background.
With a Google search, a question from half a century ago was finally resolved.
