Report | Coverage Roundtable in North Tohoku in 2026.4.29
Japan is often described as a “front-runner nation in facing social challenges.” Population decline, rapid aging, shrinking local communities, and within the church, the growing number of churches without pastors and the decline of church membership—these realities may well be the future that many nations around the world will eventually face.
In North Tohoku, one of the regions standing on the front lines of these challenges, leaders gathered across denominational lines and took a new step “from isolation to collaboration.” This gathering has the potential to become an important model case, not only for rural churches in Japan, but also for churches around the world that will face similar challenges in the years to come.
April 29, 2026 — this is a report of that “day of beginning.”
On April 29, 2026, the “Coverage Roundtable in North Tohoku 2026,” a mission network for North Tohoku, was held at Midori no Makiba Church Odate Chapel in Odate City, Akita Prefecture. Leaders from across denominational lines, mainly from the three northern Tohoku prefectures of Aomori, Akita, and Iwate, gathered together for a day of passionate testimonies and meaningful discussion.

The Goal for 2026: From “Mission Friends” to “Collaboration in Practice”
The purpose of the gathering was shared by Pastor Naohiko Kakumoto of Aomori Baptist Church, who serves as one of the catalysts for this movement. Building on the cross-denominational friendship and trust developed through previous roundtables—what we have called “mission friendship”—it was emphasized that 2026 would be a year to take a major step toward concrete collaboration and practical action.

Specifically, three pillars were presented:
A prayer network for the expansion of God’s Kingdom
Inter-church collaboration through sharing gifts and resources
Practical cooperation for evangelism and church planting in unreached areas
In light of the projected challenges facing churches by 2030—aging congregations and an increasing number of churches without pastors—as well as the missional difficulties in municipalities at risk of disappearing by 2050, the vision is for North Tohoku to become a model case of transition: from isolation to collaboration, and from decline to forward movement and expansion.
The Spread of the Gospel in Aomori, Akita, and Iwate
During the morning session, under the leadership of Pastor Noboru Muraoka of Midori no Makiba Church Odate Chapel, reports were shared about concrete mission efforts taking place in various regions.
Professor Tsunehisa Suzuki
Yurihonjo Life Community Church / Akita Prefectural University
Professor Suzuki shared about his ministry on campus, where he teaches at the university while building relationships of trust with students and communicating the love of Christ. He testified about a concert held at the university featuring the Christian musician couple, the Sugimotos. Through their music and testimony of faith, many students were given the opportunity to encounter the gospel.

Professor Rosalyn Yong
Assistant Professor, Akita University
Professor Rosalyn reported on her work through an NPO involved in supporting socially withdrawn individuals and suicide prevention. While carefully honoring professional ethics, she shared how, as a friend, she has been able to boldly speak about her own testimony of faith and the Word of God. She testified to the work of the Lord in bringing the gospel to many people through these relationships.

The Sugimoto Couple
Sugimoto Music School, Hachinohe City
The Sugimotos shared about their concert tour, which included six performances over three days and two nights, including a performance at Akita Prison. With the conviction that they were “walking in the light of the Lord,” they testified that by taking a bold step of faith outside the familiar boundaries, they experienced the freedom and joy of sharing the gospel wherever they went. They also performed one song during the Roundtable.

Morning Session, Part Two | Hope for Churches in the Midst of Difficulty
After a break and networking time, the voices from the field continued with great urgency and depth.
Shinobu Kurakazu
Hachinohe Christ Church
Referring to the CGNTV documentary “A Church Without a Pastor,” in which their church was featured, Kurakazu reported on the journey of the church in Hachinohe amid the difficult reality that 15% of churches in Japan are without pastors. Even without a pastor, the church focused simply on worshiping the Lord. As worship was restored, seven people were baptized—an astonishing work of God. She also shared the insight that the Lord continues to encourage churches that carry a clear mission and vision.

Pastor Noboru Muraoka
Midori no Makiba Church Odate Chapel
Pastor Muraoka introduced a case of a church that was forced to close due to aging and decline. Although the church building was dismantled, the believers have continued their faith through a monthly house gathering. He shared the need for “hub church”-type cooperation that can help sustain such communities of faith.

Jinguk Kim and Madoka Suzuki
Athlete Church
The Kims reported on the work of Athlete Church, a sports ministry that has continued for nine years. After moving to Morioka, they have naturally built relationships with young people and local residents through places such as public baths and sports fields, engaging in conversations shaped by biblical values. They passionately shared the joy of seeing the gospel reach people through relationships, saying that the Lord has many people in this region.

Kazuyuki Sato
Odate City Council Member / Member of Midori no Makiba Church Odate Chapel
Sato-san shared about his service in the political sphere as a city council member in Odate, seeking the blessing of the region through prayer and public service. He introduced “Olive no Kai,” a network of Christian politicians, and spoke about the importance of serving with biblical hope and wisdom in a political world marked by population decline and a sense of stagnation. He also asked for intercessory prayer.

Afternoon Session | Message by Pastor Yoshiya Hari

Pastor Yoshiya Hari of Asian Access Japan brought a message from the Word of God entitled, “Serving in the Towns Jesus Rebuked.” From Matthew 11, Pastor Hari spoke about the towns where Jesus performed mighty works, yet they did not repent—Chorazin, Bethsaida, and Capernaum.
Japan, and especially North Tohoku, can be seen as an “advanced region of social and missional challenges,” perhaps one of the hardest places in the world to see visible fruit. Yet Pastor Hari reminded us that Jesus did not rebuke the workers serving in such places. Rather, He has chosen and sent us to these difficult fields with a special measure of trust. From the same context, we also received the encouragement that the Lord invites His workers in such regions: “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.”
Pastor Hari encouraged us to value faithfulness over success, to learn from the gentleness and humility of the Lord, and to use the keys—the authority given to the church—to bind and loose in response to the challenges facing this region.
Discussion and Listening to the Lord
After the message, participants divided into five groups to discuss and brainstorm concrete next steps, seeking the will of the Lord together.
In the group reports, many practical and specific ideas were shared for helping North Tohoku move from isolation to collaboration.

1・Prayer Network: For the Expansion of God’s Kingdom

1・The need was raised for a platform where information can be gathered in one place and prayer needs can be shared in real time. Since mailing lists and newsletters can easily get buried, participants suggested a platform such as an official LINE account or dedicated website/app, where posts would trigger notifications and be shared quickly.

2・Another idea was to update the “mission map,” so that when users click on church markers on a map of Aomori and Akita, they can see each church’s current activities, such as sports ministries, children’s cafeterias, counseling ministries, and more. A layered information-sharing system, organized by region and purpose, was also proposed.

3・In addition, participants suggested practical steps that could begin immediately, such as setting aside a short time during Sunday worship services or prayer meetings to pray for a specific town, mayor, or nearby church. Another proposal was a “prayer drive,” in which believers drive through local areas while praying for those communities.

2・Inter-Church Collaboration: Matching Gifts and Making Resources Visible

1・Participants discussed creating a system where churches and individuals could list their gifts—such as sports, music, counseling, cooking, crafts, storytelling, IT, and more—and then send people or teams to churches that need those gifts.

2・Since churches and individuals often do not recognize the value of what they already have, the idea was shared of making current ministries visible and matching needs with resources, almost like a “we have this / we need this” board.

3・The success of the Sugimoto couple’s concert tour was made possible because someone served as a coordinator. This highlighted the importance of people who can function as facilitators or coordinators to help inter-church collaboration move forward smoothly.

4・For churches struggling with aging and limited IT capacity, participants also proposed sending younger people or specialists who can help set up Zoom, online streaming systems, websites, and other forms of digital support.
3・Mission in Unreached Areas, Church Planting, and Raising Workers: An Approach Rooted in the Local Community

1・Rather than only trying to invite local people to church-run events, participants emphasized the importance of actively joining local festivals and cultural events, building trust as members of the community, and sharing the gospel through those relationships.

2・Another proposal was to gather young people across prefectural lines and form joint mission teams. These teams could receive training from mission organizations such as OMF, YWAM, and Asian Access, and then be sent within North Tohoku for more effective mission engagement.

3・In order to reduce financial burden and pursue sustainable, locally rooted mission, participants also discussed the importance of raising and supporting “tentmakers”—people who work in ordinary jobs while engaging in mission in their local context.
Discussion on Financial Foundations
Toward the end of the gathering, time was given to discuss the financial foundations needed to continue this work.
As the funds that have supported the work so far have been exhausted, the groups also discussed future sustainability and shared many constructive ideas.
What became clear through the discussion was that the work of the North Tohoku Mission Network is no longer merely a fellowship gathering or a few events per year. It has entered a stage where it must continually carry responsibility for prayer sharing, inter-church cooperation, mission in unreached areas, raising workers, communication, and receiving support.
For that reason, the need was confirmed for a proper “vessel” through which the work can be carried forward with transparency and accountability—namely, the establishment of a general incorporated association.

Comments from participants included::
“There is a limit to receiving funds through an individual or a single local church. We need to create a proper channel through incorporation so that we can receive support from outside Japan and from overseas.”
“What about something like a ‘Tohoku Furusato Offering,’ appealing to Christians who are originally from Tohoku or who have a heart for Tohoku?”
“It is important to create a short three-to-five-minute video introducing the work, so that we can communicate clearly through social media.”
“Before raising funds, we need to clarify the vision, what the funds will be used for, and where responsibility lies.”

Through the sharing, there was agreement on the need to create a receiving structure for outside support.
・Establishing a General Incorporated Association
A proposal was presented to establish a general incorporated association in order to ensure transparent financial management and build credibility. The shared understanding was that, rather than using an individual’s account or the account of one local church, an organization would allow funds to be managed responsibly, make it easier to receive support from Japan and overseas, and provide credibility through proper receipts and accountability.
・Visualizing the Vision through Video
Participants also suggested creating a short three-to-five-minute video showing what is happening now in North Tohoku, and using platforms such as Instagram and Facebook to invite prayer and financial support from Japan and around the world.
・“Tohoku Furusato Offering”
Another idea was to invite Christians from Tohoku, or those around Japan and the world who have a heart for Tohoku, to support specific mission projects—for example, a church planting effort in a particular village—in a way similar to the concept of Japan’s “furusato tax” hometown giving system.

Time of Prayer
At the end, participants prayed in pairs, uniting their hearts around the vision of seeing the Kingdom of God expand throughout North Tohoku.
This Roundtable was more than simply a time of fellowship. It became a very important starting point for building a practical framework of cooperation in response to the missional challenges facing North Tohoku. We are deeply grateful for the intercessory prayers of all who read this report, and we praise the name of the Lord who has guided every step.
