He shares about the band in this Japanese interview. It’s in Japanese, but it’s absolutely worth reading with a translator.https://t.co/VnkR6oStMV https://t.co/h2lPe5NRID

He is a top-tier British drummer—a member of Sons of Kemet, a pivotal UK jazz group led by Shabaka Hutchings—who has also lent his talents to projects by artists outside the jazz realm, such as Matthew Herbert and Floating Points.
The Smile—a trio comprising Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood, and Tom Skinner—garnered immediate acclaim, partly because the group embodied a fresh sensibility distinct from that of Radiohead or Atoms for Peace. However, they declined interview requests; the group remained shrouded in mystery, particularly in its early days when they offered no public commentary whatsoever. Even around the time their debut album *A Light For Attracting Attention* (2022) was released, Skinner stated in an interview that he was "not supposed to talk about The Smile."
Tom Skinner visited Japan just this past July, leading his own band to perform material from the jazz albums he has released via the renowned Chicago label International Anthem. Having recently conducted an interview covering the full scope of his career, I reached out to him about an interview regarding The Smile to coincide with this visit; he readily agreed, saying, "I don't mind talking about it at all." He then happily reminisced about The Smile—a subject on which the other two members have said little so far—while at his hotel. I believe this resulted in a truly rare and valuable interview.
