I was just thinking about how, as of August 20th this year, it will have been a full ten years since Radiohead last came to Japan.
I'm so happy! 😭

pic.twitter.com/c36C0GW1Bo
A message I received from Thom for Japanese fans before he came to Japan ten years ago.
Even after ten years,
I still love Radiohead.
(I was on cloud nine the day before yesterday listening to Thom Yorke’s "Dawn Chorus," though—so I’m not quite sure how to interpret this! (lol))

RadioHeadのThom Yorke(トム・ヨーク)に会ったあの日、 Sting(3/11、有明アリーナ)、Deep Purple(3/13、日本武道館)、英国ミュージックの週末

I once met Thom Yorke of Radiohead.
It was only for a few minutes—just seeing him up close and exchanging greetings—but still.
It happened one summer in the 1990s. A British friend of mine, Paul (a pseudonym), had started a travel agency, and I went to Oxford to work as an attendant for one of his tours.
During the tour, many people visited Paul’s home—which also served as his office. Among them was a truly captivating woman named Rachel. I have never seen anyone else—before or since—who could pull off a bob cut and a nose piercing quite like she did.
Her bob cut was so wonderful that I actually had my own hair cut into the same style during my stay—though, admittedly, it didn't look quite the same. I realized that Rachel, the artist, was knowledgeable about photography; the level of her comments on the subject went far beyond the ordinary. I recall that the classes she taught on English language and British culture—part of the tour program—were very popular.
"Isn't she cool?" Paul said. "Her boyfriend is a famous musician." I thought, *Oh really? I’d love to see him*—that famous musician boyfriend of hers.
That opportunity came a few days later. On a day off, I went to the cinema to catch a movie, and there was Rachel. Standing next to her was the man who appeared to be that famous musician boyfriend. (Incidentally, the movie I saw was *Butterfly Kiss*—a sad film.)
Wow—he was incredibly cool.
He gave a friendly wave and said, "Enjoy the movie."
"Of course he’s cool—he’s Thom Yorke from Radiohead. You could probably even get an autograph," I thought.
Later, I said to Paul, "I saw him yesterday. He’s really cool." Paul replied, "Yeah, he is. You know, he supposedly wrote that big hit song with Rachel in mind."
Looking back, that song must have been "Creep"—a true masterpiece.
I had been obsessed with Deep Purple back in the day, and with Sting (and The Police) during my university years. Yet, I knew nothing about Radiohead. A true aficionado of British music would likely be appalled to hear that.
Then came November 2022. I learned that those two legendary British rock acts—Deep Purple and Sting—were holding concerts in Tokyo. What’s more, the dates were close together: March 11 and March 13. I bought tickets immediately.

At that time, I happened to look up Rachel. I was certain she would be enjoying a successful career. Sadly, however, I learned that Rachel Owen had passed away from cancer in 2016.
After returning home that summer, I exchanged postcards with Rachel just once. This was back before the internet and social media had become commonplace. Her postcard was stylish and lovely. Even though we had only spoken for a few weeks, the profound things she said remain in my memory to this day.
On March 11 and 13, while immersing myself in the performances by Sting and Deep Purple, I found myself thinking of Rachel’s words from time to time.
I might not be able to call myself a true aficionado of British music, yet the music I love and continue to listen to is that of British bands.
