Stories of Mountain Life 30: Melt-in-Your-Mouth Honey Treats
< This series is a work of fiction based on a family that actually lived in a mountain village after the war. >
At Yuki-chan's house, there is a beehive in the garden.
One day, when the autumn breeze was blowing and the sunlight had grown soft, Father approached the hive with a bundle of straw sending up smoke. He was wearing a long-sleeved shirt, a straw hat, and a net over his face.
Today, they were going to harvest honey.
He used the smoke to drive the bees away and cut out the upper part of the hive, which was full of honey. He didn't take all of the honeycomb. He made sure to leave enough honey and larvae cells for the bees to survive the winter.
Even so, the beehive was in an uproar.
Yuki-chan watched from a little distance away. Come to think of it, the honeybees were always buzzing around that area.
The rapeseed fields in spring were lively. Around the time of rice planting, they swarmed over the Chinese milk vetch. They also landed on the white buckwheat flowers. They even gathered nectar from the peach blossoms blooming across the valley.
The hive was filled with the nectar of flowers gathered since early spring.
The cut honeycomb was placed in a colander, put into a pot, and left overnight. That way, the honey would drip down and collect in the bottom of the pot.
Mother would carefully store that honey in jars, but what Yuki-chan was after was the honeycomb that still had sweet honey left on it.
That night, she asked her mother.
"Can I bring Maa-chan over tomorrow and eat the honeycomb together?"
"Sure, go ahead and invite her."
The next day, Yuki-chan invited her classmate Maa-chan and they came home from school together.
"We're home!"
"Hello, ma'am."
"Welcome, Maa-chan."
Mother greeted them while soothing the baby, Fumi-chan, who had just woken up from a nap.
The two girls washed their hands at the well and immediately peeked in at Fumi-chan.
Bun-chan, who is usually fussy, is in an exceptionally good mood today.
Wow, how cute.
Maa-chan, who had been saying she wanted to see a baby, is fussing over her with great delight.
Mother brought out a honeycomb filled with plenty of honey from the kitchen.
Here, try some. It's sweet.
Told by Mother,
Maa-chan tentatively put a piece of the honeycomb into her mouth and
shouted, "Wow!"
When she bit into the honey-filled comb with a squish,
it was so delicious it felt like her cheeks were melting.
Yuki-chan is already biting into her second piece.
It is a special treat they get once a year.
As the two of them licked the thick honey dripping onto their fingers,
Mother laughed and said,
"Hey, you're going to spill it... Why don't you eat it by the well?"
And so, Yuki-chan and Maa-chan
sat on the stone steps by the well, lost in conversation.
When the honey is gone, you just spit out the chewed-up honeycomb.
It's like honey-flavored chewing gum.
Attracted by the scent of the honey, two or three honeybees flew nearby.
Behind the Scenes of the Illustration
With so many wonderful AI illustrations out there,
I'm not sure if sharing a beginner's behind-the-scenes story is a good idea,
but I think I'll leave it here as a record.
This time, Gemini nailed the requested illustration on the first try.
I shouted, "Yay, good job!" ð€£
There are some minor issues, but the atmosphere is nice, isn't it?
However, these girls are cute, but their faces and hairstyles are identical,
so even I can't tell which one is Yuki-chan and which one is Maa-chan (lol).
Maybe I should have made one have pigtails and a round face, and the other a bob cut...
Also, I forgot to specify the season, so the persimmons are red while the hydrangeas are blooming, which is a bit strange, but oh well.
It was difficult to properly explain the honey-filled honeycomb for the snack to Gemini,
so I couldn't pay attention to anything else.
I wanted to include flying honeybees, but I was afraid that poor instructions would ruin the final result, so I decided against it.
The instructions for Gemini were as follows:
In the old countryside, to harvest honey from a beehive,
you cut out the honey-filled honeycomb
and let the honey drip from the comb overnight.
Then, the honeycomb that still has honey left is cut into palm-sized pieces
and given to children as a snack so they can suck the honey directly from it.
In a peaceful local garden,
two 7- or 8-year-old girls
are reaching for this snack, which is served on a white, slightly deep plate.
The honey-filled honeycomb is a translucent white color, and the honey is a melt-in-your-mouth amber.
Please draw the two girls and the honey in a beautiful watercolor style.
