Aoi no Ue (Lady Aoi) — English Translation
    Characters

    • Waki-zure (Minister): A retainer

    • Tsure (Miko): Teruhi, a maiden/shamaness

    • Shite: The vengeful spirit of Lady Rokujo

    • Kyogen: A servant

    • Waki: The High Priest of Yokawa

    • Setting: Kyoto

    • Season: Unspecified (Miscellaneous)

Minister (Spoken): I am a retainer serving at the Suzaku-in Court. Lady Aoi, the daughter of the Minister of the Left, is now gravely afflicted by an evil spirit. We have summoned renowned monks and high priests to perform grand incantations, secret rites, and medical treatments, yet none have proved effective. Therefore, we have called upon Teruhi, a shrine maiden famed for the art of the sacred azusa bow. We shall have her sound the bowstring to summon the spirit, so we may discern whether this phantom is of the living or the dead. I shall now execute my duty. Come, ring the azusa bow without delay.

Miko (Chant): Pure is the heavens, pure is the earth. Let all within and without be purified, and let the six senses be cleansed. Gathering spirit, gathering deity, draw near this very hour! Harness the dapple-grey horse of Nagahama, and hasten to this realm...

Shite (Issei): Will the teachings of the Buddha truly guide us out of this burning house of worldly suffering? Alas, my helpless heart is as tragic as the broken ox-cart abandoned at the house of Evening Faces...

Shite (Shidai): Does the wheel of fortune spin endlessly like a small ox-cart's wheel, binding us forever to the law of cause and effect?

Shite (Sashi): Indeed, the agony of the Six Realms clings to us like a turning wheel, and no living soul can escape it. Life in the human realm is fleeting, as fragile as a plantain leaf and as transient as foam on water. Though we know yesterday’s glory is but today’s dream, how foolish we are not to awaken to enlightenment! Wounded by my own downfall, my resentment toward that woman has deepened, turning into an attachment I cannot erase. Seeking even a moment’s solace, I have been drawn by the sound of the azusa bow string, appearing here as a vengeful phantom.

Shite (Sage-uta): Ah, what shame fills my heart! Even now, I ride in a veiled carriage, hiding my true identity...

Shite (Age-uta): Though I gaze at the moon all through the night, I am like a heat haze that casts no shadow beneath its beam. I stand by the tip of the azusa bow to speak of my unbearable torment...

Shite: From where does the sound of that azusa bow echo?

Miko: She lingers by the side door of the main house in the eastern wing, yet...

Shite: Because I have no physical form, no one takes notice or comes to visit me.

Miko: How strange! A noble lady of unknown identity sits in a battered ox-cart. A young attendant, seemingly her maid, clings to the pole of the unyoked cart, weeping bitter tears. What a heartbreaking sight...

Miko (Spoken): Could you have come at the command of such a noble lady?

Minister: I have a general idea of who you might be. Pray, do not hide yourself, but reveal your name.

Shite: In this fleeting world of suffering, there should be no one to hate, nor a self to mourn. Since when did I begin wandering in such delusion? Who do you think stands before you, drawn by the sound of the bow? I am the vengeful spirit of Lady Rokujo. When I was alive and favored, I enjoyed cherry-blossom banquets above the clouds and spring morning revels. On autumn nights at the Retired Emperor’s palace, I dallied beneath the moon, immersed in elegant beauty. Once so radiant, my downfall has left me like a morning glory withered by the morning dew. The resentment that sprouted unbidden in my heart grew like young bracken in the fields, turning into dew drops of tears. I have appeared here to vent this bitter grudge!

Ji-uta (Sage-uta): Do you not know the ways of a selfish world? "Kindness is not for others' sake alone"—for all actions return to oneself.

Ji-uta (Age-uta): If I treat others cold-heartedly, retribution will surely strike me in return. Why grieve now? My resentment, hidden like the underside of the arrowroot leaf, will never be exhausted...

Shite: Ah, how I hate her! I can no longer hold back from striking!

Miko: How disgraceful! For one of your noble standing, Lady Rokujo, to resort to the violence of a jealous wife—how can this be? I beg you, restrain yourself!

Shite: No! No matter what you say, I cannot stop myself from striking her now! (Approaches the bedside and strikes violently)

Miko: As I step forward to stop her, the evil spirit declares, "I shall make her suffer for generations to come!"

Shite: My malice now is retribution for the humiliation I suffered long ago!

Miko: The fierce flames of rage...

    Shite: ...consume my very body!

Miko: Do you not know the law of cause and effect?

    Shite: Learn your lesson well!

Ji-uta: Ah, what a vengeful heart! Though human resentment runs deep and makes her weep in anguish, so long as Lady Aoi lives in this world, she will remain bound to Hikaru Genji, who shines brighter than the fireflies in the dark marshes...

Shite: I am like a desolate garden overgrown with mugwort...

Ji-uta: Having lost all trace of my former self, if I were to fade away like dew on a blade of grass, my resentment would only deepen. Not even in dreams can I return to our past vows. As everything becomes a tale of the past, my longing only grows stronger. I am ashamed of my ruined appearance today. I shall force myself into this broken carriage by her pillow, conceal my form, and vanish...

Minister (Spoken): Is anyone there? Lady Aoi's affliction grows ever more violent! Go at once and summon the ascetic priest of Yokawa from Mount Hiei.

Kyogen (Servant): At your command. (Explains the situation)

Waki (Priest): I am quietly meditating by the Ten Modes of Contemplation bed, before the window of enlightenment, filled with the sacred water of Esoteric Buddhism. Who is this seeking entry?

    Kyogen: (Explains the situation)

Waki: I am currently undergoing a special retreat and do not venture out, but since this is a messenger from the Minister, I shall present myself immediately.

Minister (Spoken): Thank you deeply for coming on such short notice.

Waki (Spoken): I have heard the matter. Where is the patient?

Minister: She lies over there upon the grand bed.

Waki: Then I shall begin the incantations and prayers at once.

Minister: We place our full trust in you.

Waki: To perform these rites, I, a practitioner, follow in the footsteps of En no Gyoja, the founder of Shugendo. I have traversed the sacred peaks of the Womb and Vajra Realms, wearing a robe that brushed aside the seven precious dews. Clad in the stole of patience that guards against impurity, I rub my irataka rosary of red wood, making it clatter, as I offer my wholehearted prayer: "Namakusamanda basaradan..."

Shite: Listen, priest! Leave at once! If you do not, you will suffer great disgrace!

Waki: No matter what evil spirit you may be, how could my spiritual power ever wane? (Rubs the rosary violently once more)

Ji-uta: To the East, Trailokyavijaya Vidyaraja!

Shite: To the South, Kundali Yaksha!

Ji-uta: To the West, Yamantaka Vidyaraja!

    Shite: To the North, Vajra...

    Ji-uta: ...Yaksha Vidyaraja!

Shite: In the Center, the Great Holy...

Ji-uta: ...Acala Vidyaraja! "Namakusamanda basaradan senda makaroshana sowataya untarata kanman. Those who hear my teaching shall gain great wisdom; those who understand my heart shall attain Buddhahood in this very body."

Shite: Ah, how terrifying is the voice of Hannya (Supreme Wisdom)! The deeds of this vengeful spirit end here. I shall never appear again...

Ji-uta: Hearing the voice chanting the sacred sutras, even the terrifying demon softens her heart, assuming a form of patience and compassion. A Bodhisattva descends to welcome her. How wondrous it is to attain Buddhahood and be liberated from all suffering...

Aoi no Ue (Dame Aoi) — Traduction française

    Personnages

    • Waki-zure (Ministre) : Un vassal

Shite (Sage-uta) : Ah, quelle honte remplit mon cœur !

Pourquoi donc me lamenter ?

Shite : ...consument mon propre corps !

Shite : Au Sud, Kundali Yaksha !

    Le Chœur : À l'Ouest, Yamāntaka Vidyarāja !

    Shite : Au Nord, Vajra...

Le Chœur : ...Yaksha Vidyarāja !

Shite : Au Centre, le Grand Saint...

Le Chœur : ...Acala Vidyarāja (Fudō Myōō) ! « Namakusamanda basaradan senda makaroshana sowataya untarata kanman.
