A New Species Discovered in the Depths of Akarium
In Brief
A strange deep-sea shellfish whose hand keeps moving backward.
Only when a nearby creature is about to die does the hand begin to move in the normal direction.
Perhaps it is not counting “time,” but “time left.”
TOKEIGAI

生態
Ecology
A bivalve with a radial pattern on its shell that resembles the face of a clock.
At its center is a glowing, hand-like organ that normally moves slowly counterclockwise.
But just before a nearby creature dies, the hand begins to move clockwise.
The reason remains unknown.
Deep-Sea Observation Log
The hand of the Tokeigai always turns backward.
How far does it move in a day?
What is it measuring?
No one knew.
On the twelfth day after its discovery,
a small fish in the observation tank began to weaken.
That was when it happened.
The Tokeigai’s hand stopped.
Then, for the first time,
it began to move clockwise.
一周。
One turn.
二周。
Two.
三周。
Three.
The moment the little fish stopped moving,
the hand stopped too.
Then, as if nothing had happened,
it began turning backward again.
Since that day,
I have never thought of that shellfish as a clock.
What it is counting is not time.
Perhaps
it is counting the time left.
