Characteristics & Ecology
生まれたばかりのイロアソビウオは、ほとんど透明。
成長するにつれて、サンゴの赤、クラゲの青、エビの黄色など、出会った生き物の色を身体に取り込んでいく。
色は鱗や長いヒレに少しずつ蓄積され、一度取り込んだ色は消えない。
そのため、成魚の身体を調べると、その一匹がどんな生き物たちと出会ってきたのかが分かるという。
鮮やかな個体ほど、長い旅をしてきた証拠なのだ。
A newborn Iroasobiuo is almost completely transparent.
As it grows, it collects colors from the creatures it encounters—the red of coral, the blue of jellyfish, the yellow of shrimp.
These colors gradually accumulate across its scales and flowing fins. Once a color has been collected, it never disappears.
By studying an adult Iroasobiuo, researchers can trace the creatures it has encountered throughout its life.
The more colorful the fish, the longer and richer its journey has been.

はじめて見つけた時、それはほとんど透明だった。
赤いサンゴのそばを通ると、鱗が一枚、赤くなった。
青いクラゲに近づくと、今度は尾びれに青が宿った。
黄色いエビの群れを追いかけ、紫色のサンゴ礁を抜ける。
泳ぐたび、その魚は少しずつ鮮やかになっていった。
やがて暗闇の中に、見たこともない色の魚が現れた。
深海には色がないと思っていた。
違った。
ここには、たくさんの色がある。
ただ、その色を一匹ずつ集めてくれる生き物を、
私たちがまだ知らなかっただけなのだ。
When I first discovered it, the fish was almost transparent.
It passed a red coral, and one of its scales turned red.
It drifted beside a blue jellyfish, and blue appeared along its tail.
It chased a school of yellow shrimp and slipped through a forest of purple coral.
With every encounter, the little fish became more colorful.
Eventually, something unlike anything I had ever seen emerged from the darkness—a fish painted with the colors of an entire journey.
I used to think the deep sea was colorless.
I was wrong.
There are countless colors down here.
We simply hadn't discovered the creature
that collects them one by one.
