PAPIER LABO.

私が初めてPAPIER LABO.のことを知ったのは、2019年の『Kinfolk』第32号でした。興味を惹かれて原宿の店舗を探し当て、いくつかアイテムを買って帰りました。そのうちの一つが、小さな木の家でした。ウォールナットとホワイトアッシュの端材で作られた「PENCILVILLA」は、カメラを向けることを思いつくまで、何ヶ月も私の机の上に置かれていました。プロダクトアニメーターになろうと決心した時のことは覚えていません。ただ、あの小さな家を撮影しようと決めたことだけは覚えています。今でも、自分の鉛筆はすべてこれで削っています。

I first heard of PAPIER LABO. in the 2019 Issue 32 of Kinfolk. Curious, I tracked down their shop in Harajuku and came home with a few items—one of them a small wooden house. PENCILVILLA, cut from leftover walnut and white ash, sat on my desk for months before it occurred to me to point a camera at it. I don't remember ever deciding to become a product animator. I just remember deciding to film that house. I still use it for every pencil I own.

1年後、PAPIER LABO.がInstagramで私のアニメーションを見つけ、「リポストしてもいいですか？」と連絡をくれました。とても嬉しかったです。もちろん「はい」と答え、さらに「他の作品も作らせてもらえませんか？」と尋ねました。

A year later, PAPIER LABO. found my animation on Instagram and reached out to ask if they could repost it. I was thrilled. I said yes, of course, and asked if I could make more for them.

同じ年の夏、私は「印刷加工連」のメモパッドを撮影しました。そのデザインがとても気に入り、その後何年にもわたって、私のアニメーションの他のシーンでも小道具として自然に登場するようになりました。ひとつの動画がきっかけで親交が生まれ、その繋がりは年月を経て、多くのプロジェクトへと育っていきました。

That same summer, I filmed their 印刷加工連 memo pad. I loved its design so much that it naturally became a recurring prop in my other scenes for years afterward. One video became a friendship, and that friendship grew, over the years, into many projects.

2024年には、「和紙香」のアニメーションを制作しました。インクで印刷するのではなく、和紙そのものに香りを染み込ませたユニークな製品です。もともとお香が好きだったこともあり、箱を開けた瞬間、すでに頭の中でアニメーションが再生されていました。

In 2024 I animated their 和紙香, a unique washi paper infused with scent rather than printed ink. I've always loved incense, and the moment I opened the box, I could already see the animation playing in my head..

その年の暮れには、2つの素晴らしいプロダクトが送られてきました。「四月の魚」が制作したワイヤースタンドと、それに合わせる卓上カレンダーです。このカレンダースタンドの動きは、私にとって初めて木材を使った作品になりました。17個のパーツを切り出し、まるで水滴のようにコマ撮りで動かしました。「時は水のように流れる」というアイデアからです。

By the end of that year, they sent me two their wonderful products: a desk calendar and its accompanying wire stand, created by 四月の魚. The stand under it marked my first time working with wood—seventeen pieces cut to move frame by frame, like a drop of water. Time is like water, the idea went.

壁掛けカレンダーもありました。こちらはアドベントカレンダーのように、毎日の扉を開けるとその後ろに甘いものが隠れているようなアニメーションにしました。

There was a wall calendar too, animated like an advent calendar: a door for each day, something sweet behind it.

2025年、これらの作品はFabCafe Kyotoで開催した『MY FAVORITE PRODUCT DESIGN』という展覧会の一部となりました。この展示は、私が日々愛用しているプロダクトを題材にした商業作品、非商業作品、ファンメイド作品を集め、実物のアイテムと映像を並べて展示するものでした。

In 2025, these pieces became part of an exhibition at FabCafe Kyoto titled MY FAVORITE PRODUCT DESIGN. The exhibition was built to show commercial, non-commercial, and fan-made projects based on the products I use and love every day, presenting the physical items and the films side by side.

PAPIER LABO.はまさにその旅の始まりの場所でした。だからこそ、この展示は彼らの作品と、それと同じような空気感やスピリットを持ついくつかのブランドを中心に構成したのです。

PAPIER LABO. was where that journey has started, so the showcase was built around them and a few other brands that share a similar atmosphere and spirit.
