MD PRODUCT

2019年、新宿の小さな文房具店でMDノートを見つけました。その場ですぐに何冊か買いました。
私が見てきた中でも、かなりミニマルなデザインでした。でも同時に、すべてがきれいにまとまっているように感じました。MD用紙、開くとフラットになる糸かがり製本、グラシン紙のカバー、インデックスシール。余分なものは何もないけれど、必要なものはすべてある。
店でノートを開いた瞬間、アニメーションのアイデアが浮かびました。
ノートが開いていく動きが夜明けのようで、そこから草が伸びて、すべてがゆっくりと目を覚ましていくイメージです。そのままスタジオに戻り、その日のうちに撮影しました。

I found the MD Notebook in 2019, in a small stationery store in Shinjuku. I bought a few right away.
The design was one of the most minimalistic I had seen, but at the same time it felt complete: MD Paper, thread binding that lets the notebook open flat, a glassine cover, index stickers. Nothing extra, but everything was there.
The idea for an animation came the moment I opened it in the store.
I imagined the notebook opening like a sunrise, grass growing, everything slowly waking up. I went straight to my studio and shot it that same day.

それ以来、MDノートは私のプロップの中でも、かなりよく使うものになりました。これまで多くのアニメーションで使ってきましたし、今でもほぼ毎日使っています。毎朝、コーヒーを横に置いて、ペンで紙にその日の予定を書きます。Apple Notesで同じことを試したこともありますが、やっぱり同じようにはいきません。その後、MDノートを使ってもう一本、今度は海をテーマにしたアニメーションを作りました。

Since then, the MD Notebook has become one of the most used items in my props collection. I have used it in many animations, and I still use it almost every day. Every morning I write my plans with a pen, on paper, coffee next to me. I have tried doing the same thing in Apple Notes, but it never works quite the same way. Later I made a second animation with the MD Notebook, this time about the sea.

ここからが面白いところです。このアニメーションを作ったとき、MDノートの製造に海からの素材が使われていることを、私はまったく知りませんでした。そのことを知ったのはずっと後、MD Productの記事のインタビューをしたときです。海のアニメーションを作った後でこのことを知って、なんだか面白い偶然だなと思いました。

And here is the funny part. When I made this animation, I had no idea that MD uses materials from the sea in the production of its notebooks. I only found this out much later, during the interview for the MD Product article. So I made a sea animation without knowing about this connection. I found that coincidence quite funny.

MD Productが、私とMDノートを使った作品についてのストーリーを公開してくれました。

MDノートは、2025年にFabCafe Kyotoで開催した展示会 MY FAVORITE PRODUCT DESIGN の展示作品のひとつにもなりました。私にとっては、ごく自然な選択でした。日常生活でも、アニメーション制作でも、何年も使い続けているプロダクトだからです。

The MD Notebook also became part of the exhibition MY FAVORITE PRODUCT DESIGN at FabCafe Kyoto in 2025. For me, it was a natural choice. It is a product I have used for years, both in everyday life and in my animation work.
