TAKEO PAPER
TAKEO is a paper trading company in Tokyo, founded in 1899. Their paper has been essential to my work for many years, and I've made a point of visiting almost every exhibition at their stores. Working on a real project with TAKEO had been a dream of mine for a long time. Before FOLDFOLD, I'd already made a few fan videos with their paper, on my own.
So I felt incredibly lucky when the TAKEO team accepted my invitation to be part of FOLDFOLD. My idea was to animate the elements I feel here in Japan: the sea, the earth, and the cities growing so fast.
I visited TAKEO Yodoyabashi several times to check textures that would suit the idea, and chose the paper for each scene based on its texture, weight, and color: NT Rasha Dark Brown 130kg for Earth, Shin Danshi Hanada 160kg for Ocean, Sagan GA 130kg for City. I ordered the paper through TAKEO Mihoncho Online.

The whole production took two months. Every scene was made by hand: paper folded, cut, and assembled into three-dimensional forms, then animated frame by frame in the studio. Each one started as paper props, then a test shoot, before the final animation, about 50 frames per scene.
After the project, the TAKEO Yodoyabashi team visited my studio, and we had a long conversation. It felt like a dream.
会場は奈良のBO/OK。
These scenes are part of FOLDFOLD, my solo exhibition at BO/OK, in Nara.
FOLDFOLD was created at the invitation of Ryoko Nagaoka, the designer and artist behind BO/OK — an art book store and design studio in Nara.
September 6–28, 2026. Alongside the film, the exhibition shows the original TAKEO props, and a flipbook I made by hand from the animation.
