TOKINOHA
TOKINOHA is a ceramic studio in Kyoto built on one idea: a vessel is only complete once it is used. They started in 2009 in a small house in Kitayama, and later moved into Kyoto's Kiyomizu-yaki district in Yamashina, where the shop, workshop, and studio now share one building with a bright white exterior. A glass wall lets you watch the potters at work right in the middle of the shop.
I have been a fan of TOKINOHA's pieces since I moved to Kyoto, with several at home, and I often visit their store in Yamashina, the one with a big tree inside. I could always find the perfect piece there.

My idea for this animation was to show how their pieces are made: from raw stone, to clay, to the finished object, ending with steam rising from the bowl, as if it had just been filled. It felt close to what TOKINOHA already believes about their own pieces.

I visited their Higashiyama store to choose the objects for the animation. I tried to find pieces with similar shapes and colors, so I could animate them as one continuous object, changing shape frame by frame.
This animation, and the props from it, were shown at my solo exhibition テトテラ at Shōyō-in Temple, alongside other animations about crafts I love: WARA, Kamiji Kakimoto, and Remnant & Co., with a soundscape by Masahiko Takeda.
