55 - Quintessential
Root beer is a quintessential American beverage.”

Apple pie (アップルパイ)。
Hot dogs (ホットドッグ)。
Barbecue ribs (バーベキューリブ)。

Clam chowder (クラムチャウダー)。
Tex Mex (テックスメックス)。
Chicago Style Deep Dish Pizza (シカゴスタイルのディープディッシュピザ)。
Fried Chicken (フライドチキン)。

Macaroni and cheese (マカロニ・アンド・チーズ)。
Ice Cream (アイスクリーム)。

ENGLISH ORIGINAL
Quintessential
As I continue to explore the concept of authenticity in everyday life, I’d like to write about a special word.
Quintessential
Nearly forty years have passed since I last taught English in Japan. However, if were teaching today, I’d encourage my students to use this word. It’s somewhat uncommon, but sophisticated, and makes the speaker sound intelligent. Additionally, it’s a beautiful-sounding word.
Here’s an example sentence:
“Root beer is a quintessential American beverage.”
Many Japanese are unfamiliar with root beer. The few people who have tried it say it tastes like medicine. If the catchphrase for Calpis was “The taste of first love,” perhaps the catchphrase for root beer could be “The taste of Salonpas.”
I searched Google for “quintessential American” and found many references to foods. The popular website Buzzfeed described 28 quintessential American experiences and over half of them mentioned food. One example was eating a hot dog at an American baseball game.

Another website listed ten quintessential American foods. Some of these may be familiar to Japanese and even are available in Japan. However, I think that the “authentic” versions can be found only in America. Some, like barbecue ribs, vary by regions, with each region declaring that its version is more authentic.
If I were to pick my own quintessentially American foods I would have a different list. And yes, my list would include root beer!

I have arranged these foods into a pyramid. (I’ll describe them from top to bottom, left to right.)
Apple pie. Few mothers or grandmothers make it at home these days, but it remains a symbol of American tradition.
Hot dogs. Hot dogs aren’t usually eaten at restaurants, but are easily made at home and enjoyed at sports events and fairs.
Barbecue ribs. I predict that a future American civil war will not be fought between Democrats and Republicans. Instead, it will involve different states that claim their barbecue are the best in America. (I am exaggerating only very slightly.)

Clam chowder. This creamy soup is most associated with the northeast corner of the U.S., but there are many versions around the country.
Tex Mex. This blend of Mexican and American flavors includes nachos and fajitas.
Cornbread. Before white settlers arrived, Native Americans cooked with corn. Today, many versions of cornbread are enjoyed around the country, particularly in the South.
Chicago Style Deep Dish Pizza. Many people would argue that Detroit pizza is better. But Chicago pizza is certainly famous, and should be enjoyed in Chicago.
Fried Chicken. A popular food that can be enjoyed at restaurants and made at home. Very popular as a family meal.

Macaroni and cheese. This has been described as a ‘comfort food’ and is nostalgic for many Americans. There’s a cheap instant version available at grocery stores, and many American children could make this themselves as an after-school snack or meal.
Ice Cream. While this isn’t particularly American, it does have wide popularity around the country. America’s most favorite ice cream flavors are vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry. In fourth place is butter pecan.
