Today’s Choice is Already the Future「今日の選択が、もう未来になっている」

At night, looking at my smartphone screen, time simply melts away. One hour, two hours pass before I realize it. I have not gained anything in particular, yet my fingers move on their own. In that moment, the Buddhist concept of past, present, and future becomes a very real story.

For example, yesterday. A single word I sent to a friend was a little cold. There was no deep meaning behind it. I was just tired. But my friend's reaction became slightly distant. That is the past.

Today. Feeling a somewhat awkward atmosphere, I find myself choosing my words more carefully when I talk to that same person again. That is the present.

And the future. If I change nothing, our conversations will decrease, and the distance between us will slowly widen. But conversely, if I can say just one thing today, like, sorry, I was a bit tired back then, the flow might change.

In Buddhist philosophy, to foresee does not mean to predict the future. It means knowing how your current actions are connected to the future.

When we are young, the future feels too far away to be real. But in truth, the future does not exist somewhere else. It has already begun to move quietly as an extension of the present.

Take studying, for instance. A single day of thinking, not today, starts to pile up. Before you know it, it becomes a visible gap. Or consider human relationships. A casual act of kindness can become a great help later on. Conversely, a light, careless word can remain in someone's heart forever.

A Buddha's perspective is not so much about having a supernatural power. It is closer to a state of truly seeing the now.

The future is not in the distance. Half of it is already mixed into today's choices. Whether you close your smartphone or not. Whether you say that one word of apology or not. Whether you choose to be just a little kinder to someone or not.

The past cannot be changed. But the meaning of the past can be changed. The present disappears in an instant. But that instant creates the future.

In truth, the power to see the future is nothing special. It might simply be the strength to not treat today with carelessness.
