「STYX, FOREIGNER, JOURNEY, BOSTON, そして QUEEN（前者ほどではないけど）といったバンドから多大な影響を受けたんだ。彼らは皆、僕の音楽スタイルに大きなインパクトを与えてくれたんだ」
ちょうど30年前。メロディを愛するハードロックやメタルの若いファンにとって、JOURNEY や BOSTON, FOREIGNER は少し前時代的な存在でした。もっといえば、当時の最前線のテクニックやハードなエッジが幾分足りないように感じられたのです。
そんな時代に、FAIR WARNING や TEN, HAREM SCAREM といったメロディとテクニック、そして適度なエッジを備えた "痒いところに手が届く" バンドが乱立し、ここ日本で人気を得たのは幸運で、同時にある意味必然だったのかもしれませんね。
「Steve Perry と Brad Delp は、僕にとって、これまで聴いた中で最も美しい歌声の持ち主なんだ。今でも彼らの歌声には息をのむような感動を覚えるよ。これらのアルバムはすべて、僕が心から愛するサウンドを持っていて、中でも彼らのボーカル・ハーモニーは、常に僕に大きなインスピレーションを与えてくれる存在なんだ」
そうした新時代のメロハーには、雄弁かつ華麗な旋律の上に潤沢なハーモニーを織り込んでいました。そしてその絢爛なるハーモニーこそが、人々を魅了する鍵でした。
オランダからまさに彗星のごとく登場した TERRA NOVA は、ハーモニーの魔法を誰よりも巧みに操りました。まるで Steve Perry をメタルに寄せたかのような Fred Hendrix の甘く切ない歌声は、ハーモニーのミルフィーユに包まれて私たちの心を激しく揺さぶりました。
多くのメロハー・バンドがグラム・メタルやプログレッシブ・ロック、ネオ・クラシカルの旗の下に集っていたのに対して、TERRA NOVA はしっかりと AOR の本流である JOURNEY や BOSTON, FOREIGNER に STYX の肖像をしっかりと胸に抱いていました。だからこそ尊く、"新大陸" として光輝いていたのです。
「TERRA NOVA のアルバムの中で一番のお気に入りは "Make My Day" なんだ。サウンド面でも、全体的なパフォーマンスの面でも、最高の出来だったと思うよ。次は楽曲のクオリティの高さから "Break Away"。3番目は "Livin' It Up" だろうか。今振り返ると、やはりデビュー・アルバムらしい初々しさも感じられるからね」
そんな大胆で挑戦的な TERRA NOVA の旅路は傑作 "Make My Day" で一度完結を見ます。なぜこのアルバムが彼らの最高峰なのか？それは "Lovesick" が物語るように、TERRA NOVA 特有のメロディが優れた技巧と完璧に融合を果たしたから。これだけ全ての楽器が雄弁に主張できるメロハー・バンドが他にいたでしょうか？
もっといえば、Gesuino Derosas という名人を擁しながら、"Livin It Up" から TERRA NOVA の "リフ" はキーボードが牽引していましたし、だからこそ他のバンドとは完全に一線を画していました。そう、そこには脈々と流れる AOR の確かな血筋がたしかに息づいていたのです。
今回弊誌では、TERRA NOVA の声 Fred Hendrix その人にインタビューを行うことができました。AQUILA、そして TERRA NOVA として復活した彼らの新作はもうすぐそこ。こんな暗くて嘘だらけの世の中には、誠実な TERRA NOVA の音楽がきっと必要でしょう。どうぞ！！

INTERVIEW WITH FRED HENDRIX

Q1: When "Livin' It Up" was released, I was blown away by how amazing it was. And even now, thirty years later, I’m still listening to it―it hasn't lost its luster at all! Looking back on it now, what does that album mean to you?

【FRED】: Livin' It Up was the first full album I recorded. It was my first real opportunity to show the audience what I had to offer musically. The band and I were both delighted and grateful to discover that there was an audience for our music.

Q1: "Livin' It Up" がリリースされた当時、私はその素晴らしさに圧倒されました。30年経った今でも聴き続けていますが、全く色あせていませんね！今振り返ってみて、あのアルバムはあなたにとってどのような意味を持っていますか？

【FRED】: "Livin' It Up" は、僕が初めてレコーディングしたフル・アルバムだったんだ。自分の音楽性をオーディエンスに示すための、本格的な最初のチャンスだったんだよ。自分たちの音楽を求めてくれる聴衆がいると知ったときは、バンド全員が喜びと感謝の気持ちでいっぱいになったんだ。

Q2: When I first heard "Livin' It Up," it struck me as soundinglike a heavier version of Queen, Journey, Styx. Did you actually growup listening to that kind of music?

【FRED】: Yes. Bands like Styx, Foreigner, Journey, Boston, and, to a lesser extent, Queen were my biggest influences. They all made a huge impression on my musical style.

Q2: 初めて "Livin' It Up" を聴いたとき、QUEEN や JOURNEY, STYX をよりヘヴィでテクニカルにしたようなサウンドだと感じました。実際にそういった音楽を聴いて育ったのですか？

【FRED】: そうだね。STYX, FOREIGNER, JOURNEY, BOSTON, そして QUEEN（前者ほどではないけど）といったバンドから多大な影響を受けたんだ。彼らは皆、僕の音楽スタイルに大きなインパクトを与えてくれたんだ。

Q3: Speaking of Queen, the Netherlands produced artists like Robby Valentine and Valensia who worshipped the band. Theywere very popular in Japan, too. Did you feel a sense of affinity with them?

【FRED】: Not particularly. I like both artists very much, but they were slightly different from Terra Nova. They made music fromtheir own perspective, just as we did. They arrived on thescene just before the grunge movement took over and were still able to enjoy considerable success in the Netherlands. Unfortunately, Terra Nova just missed that opportunity.

Q3: QUEEN といえば、オランダからはRobby Valentine や Valensia といった、彼らを崇拝するアーティストが登場しましたよね。彼らは日本でも非常に人気がありましたが、そうしたアーティストに対して親近感のようなものはありましたか？

【FRED】: 特にはなかったよ。どちらのアーティストも大好きだけど、TERRA NOVA とは少しタイプが異なってい彼らは僕たちと同様、独自の視点で音楽を作っていたからね。彼らはグランジ・ムーブメントが台頭する直前にシーンに登場し、オランダ国内でかなりの成功を収めることができたんだ。残念ながら、僕らはそのタイミングを逃してしまったんだ。

Q4: In fact, Terra Nova was very popular in Japan and even successfully toured the country. Could you share some memories from that time? Why do you think you were able toachieve such success in Japan, a place so far from the Netherlands?

【FRED】: This kind of music was fading away in the Netherlands, but in Japan it was still very much alive. Luckily for us, that was―and still is―our passion. I remember our first show in Osaka especially well. We had an amazing time touring Japan, and the meet-and-greets were wonderful. The entire tour was exceptionally well organized, and we have nothing but greatmemories of that time.

Q4: とはいえ、TERRA NOVA は日本で非常に人気があり、ツアーも成功させていましたよね。当時の日本との思い出を聞かせていただけますか？オランダから遠く離れた日本で、なぜそれほどの成功を収めることができたのだと思いますか？

【FRED】: オランダではこの種の音楽が下火になりつつあったけど、日本ではまだ大いに盛り上がっていたんだよね。幸運なことに、そうした音楽こそが僕たちの情熱の対象であり、今でも変わらず愛している音楽なんだよ。特に大阪での初ライブはよく覚えているよ。日本でのツアーは本当に素晴らしく、ファンとの交流会（ミート＆グリート）も最高だった。ツアー全体の運営も非常に素晴らしく、当時の思い出は素晴らしいものばかりだよ！

Q5: At the time, Japan wasn't heavily influenced by grunge or dark, heavy music, even though that style dominated theglobal scene. Had the timing been different, you surely wouldhave achieved even greater success―after all, Terra Nova's music was truly outstanding. How did you view that situatio nand the grunge movement?

【FRED】: Like I mentioned before, grunge got in our way and preventedus from reaching an even bigger audience. But it never stopped us from doing what we loved most: creating the kind of music that came straight from our hearts.

Q5: 当時、世界の音楽シーンはグランジやダークでヘヴィなサウンドが席巻していましたが、日本はそれほど大きな影響を受けていませんでしたね。だからこそ、もしタイミングが違っていれば、あなたたちは間違いなくもっと大きな成功を収めていたはずです。なにしろ、TERRA NOVA の音楽は本当に素晴らしかったのですから。当時の状況やグランジ・ムーブメントを、あなたはどう捉えていましたか？

【FRED】: 先ほども触れたけど、グランジの流行は僕たちの前に立ちはだかり、より多くの聴衆に届くのを阻む要因には確実になっていたね。だけど、それでもそうした流行は、僕たちが何よりも愛していたこと――つまり、心の底から湧き出る音楽を創るということ――を止めることは決してできなかったんだよ。

Q6: What made Terra Nova so great was that the songs were embellished not just by great melodies and vocals, but also by technical shredding and keyboards. In fact, there were hardly any hard rock bands at the time that possessed such outstanding technical skill and shredding ability. Did you consider that kind of virtuosity to be one of your trademarks?

【FRED】: Thanks for the compliment! I never really thought about it thatway. We simply played the music we loved from the bottom of our hearts and always gave it everything we had. If peopleconsider that one of our trademarks, then I'm very grateful forthat.

Q6: TERRA NOVA の素晴らしさは、優れたメロディやボーカルに加え、テクニカルなシュレッド・ギターやキーボードが楽曲を彩っていた点にありました。実際、当時あれほどの卓越した技術やシュレッドの能力を兼ね備えたハードロック・バンドはほとんど存在しませんでした。そうした超絶技巧を、自分たちのトレードマークの一つだと意識していましたか？

【FRED】: 嬉しい言葉をありがとう！自分たちでは、あまりそのようには意識していなかったね。ただ単に、心の底から愛する音楽を演奏し、常に全力を尽くしていただけなんだ。もし人々がそれを僕たちのトレードマークの一つだと捉えてくれているなら、とても感謝したいけどね。

Q7: Personally, I’m particularly fond of the songs that movedme when I was younger―"Livin' It Up," "Break Away," and "Make My Day" (that album is so underrated!). Which Terra Nova albums are your personal favorites or hold a special place for you?

【FRED】: My all-time favorite Terra Nova album is Make My Day. In my opinion, it's our best-sounding album and our strongest overall performance. Break Away comes next because of thequality of the songs. Livin' It Up would be third. Looking back, I can still hear that it was our first album. I also think Escape, Come Alive, and Ring That Bell are excellent albums.

Q7: 個人的には、若い頃に心を動かされた作品―― "Livin' It Up", "Break Away", "Make My Day"（こよアルバムはもっと評価されるべきです！）――が特に好きなんです。あなたにとって、TERRA NOVA のアルバムの中で特にお気に入り、あるいは特別な思い入れがあるのはどの作品ですか？

【FRED】: 僕にとって、TERRA NOVA のアルバムの中で一番のお気に入りは "Make My Day" なんだ。サウンド面でも、全体的なパフォーマンスの面でも、最高の出来だったと思うよ。次は楽曲のクオリティの高さから "Break Away"。3番目は "Livin' It Up" だろうか。今振り返ると、やはりデビュー・アルバムらしい初々しさも感じられるからね。でも、"Escape" や "Come Alive"、"Ring That Bell" も素晴らしいアルバムだと思っているよ。

Q8: The world has changed drastically in the thirty years since1996. Streaming has become the dominant force in the music industry, and the world is overshadowed by dark clouds of war, oppression, discrimination, and violence. It is precisely because we live in such times that I feel the world needs the purity, beauty, sincerity, and positive energy of your melodichard rock. Would you agree?

【FRED】: Oh yes, I agree 100%. It's definitely time for more music withpositive vibes. I think people need music that brings hope, joy, and a little escape from everything that's happening in theworld.

Q8: 1996年から現在までの30年間で、世界は劇的に変わりました。音楽業界ではストリーミングが主流となり、世界は戦争、抑圧、差別、暴力といった暗雲に覆われています。だからこそ、あなたの奏でるメロディック・ハードロックが持つ純粋さ、美しさ、誠実さ、そしてポジティブなエネルギーが、今この世界に必要とされているように感じますよ。

【FRED】: そうだね、100%同感だよ。今は間違いなく、ポジティブなヴァイブスを持った音楽が求められている時期だよね。世界で起きている様々な出来事から少し離れて、希望や喜びを感じさせてくれる音楽を、人々は必要としているのだと思うんだ。

Q9: That’s exactly why everyone is waiting for new material from Terra Nova. When can we expect to hear the new album?

【FRED】: Our new album, Infinite, is scheduled to be released around November through King Records. We are still working on itright now.

Q9: まさにそれこそが、誰もが TERRA NOVA の新作を待ち望んでいる理由です。新しいアルバムはいつ頃聴けるのでしょうか？

【FRED】: 新作 "Infinite" は、キング・レコードから11月頃にリリースされる予定だよ。現在も制作作業を進めているところさ。

It’s always hard to narrow it down but these albums had thebiggest impact on me:

Steve Perry and Brad Delp have, for me, the most beautiful voices I've ever heard. Even today, I still find them breathtaking. All of these albums have a certain sound that I absolutely love, and the vocal harmonies have always been a huge inspiration to me.
