小さな「白」の宝探し Hunting for Little Shades of "White"

書画屋山添のスタッフになって、早いもので3ヶ月。最初はドキドキしていた掛け軸の扱いも少しずつ慣れ、毎日の小さな発見が密かな楽しみになっています。
先日、遠い異国からのお客様が気に入ってくださった水墨画の掛け軸は軸先がアイボリーのものでした。
店主・りょうさんによると、象牙の軸先は、当時は最高水準とされた貴重な逸品の掛け軸に誂えられていたそうです。今は国際規制があるため、りょうさんが丁寧にお話しして別の軸先へ付け替え、夜にホテルへお届けすることに。京都らしい細やかなおおもてなしの心に、そっと胸が温かくなりました。
その時ふと、我が家で30年以上ともに過ごすピアノを思い出しました。友人が「超✨掘り出しものの名器だよ」と教えてくれて迎えて以来、毎日を優しく癒やしてくれる大切な相棒です。
調べてみると、その白鍵は「ニューアイボリー」という素材でした。大切な自然を守るための規制をきっかけに、知恵としなやかな技術を絞って作られた、象牙に代わる優しい人工の白。
でも歴史を遡ると、かつてショパンが愛したピアノ「プレイエル」などの鍵盤は、すべて本物の象牙だったそうです。
お店で出会った、海外への旅にも安心して送り出せる白。ショパンが指を滑らせた、時代を超える白。...そして、我が家で一緒に時を紡いできた温かい白。形を変えて、美しい芸術や、癒しの音色を支えてきた「白」の物語に、なんだか愛おしいロマンを感じます。

It has been three months since I started working at Shogaya Yamazoe. While learning the delicate art of handling hanging scrolls, a recent encounter left a deep impression on me.
A customer from abroad fell in love with a beautiful scroll. Our shop owner Ryo shared that it was one of rare masterpieces crafted to the highest standards of its time, which is why it was adorned with exquisite ivory knobs.
Because of modern international regulations, Ryo thoughtfully explained the situation, carefully replaced them with another beautiful material, and delivered the scroll to the customer’s hotel later that evening. Watching this mindful, Kyoto-style hospitality warmed my heart.
While, this made me think of my own piano at home, a cherished companion of over 30 years. Its white keys are made of "New Ivory"—a gentle, synthetic material born from Japanese ingenuity and fine craftsmanship to protect nature. Yet, looking back in time, the keys of the historic pianos loved by Chopin were all genuine ivory.
The reassuring white knobs that allow artwork to travel safely across borders.
The timeless white that Chopin’s fingers once danced upon.
And the warm white that has brought comforting melodies to my home for decades.
There is a quiet romance in how "white," in its changing forms, has always supported the highest arts and healing sounds.
