Two little moments that made my heart feel softly warm while I was out shopping.
The prompt drops at 6 p.m. on Mondays. Plenty of my childrenâs kindnesses came to mind, but somehow I felt this time wasnât about them, so I waited a few days.
Then Thursday came. All I could think about was my kids and my daughterâs cat. I made up my mind: if thatâs the case, Iâll go ahead and attract something warm myself. I also really needed applesâso off to Costco I went.
In my area, there are six Costcos within a 30-minute drive, just off the top of my head. Thankfully, the closest one is only seven minutes away. If I time it to avoid traffic, Iâm there in no time.
First up: five bags of apples (1.36 kg each). All for meâthey disappear pretty quickly. My favorite is the small Fuji apples in the Mickey Mouse bag. But every year thereâs a stretch when Fuji switches over to Gala, and right now is exactly that âslightly lonelyâ season. Iâm quietly waiting for the Fuji to come back.
As usual, I put bananas and spinach in the cart, then tofuâHouse brand, four-pack; each pack is 453 g, a bit bigger than the size you often see in Japan. I finally found the flaxseed powder I really wanted and felt relieved. All that was left was pistachios. Just as I was about to pass the flower section, I saw 24-stem rose bouquets on sale. Normally Iâd tell myself, âNot today,â and keep walkingâbut today I stopped.
The week before, Iâd bought three bouquets for my birthday, and right after that, my sons brought me flowers too. My whole place was full of flowers. Even so, the orange roses absolutely called me back.
Intuition: âBuy them.â
Me: âOkay, I will.â
I simply followed my intuition and chose something I usually wouldnât. Even on sale, $15.99 feels quite extravagant for me right now, and itâs not even a necessity. Still, in that moment, I almost heard Abraham say, âDo what feels good.â
The hesitation vanished. Like a little kid, I picked out the bouquet that made my heart flutterâjust for me. I lifted the big, heavy roses and gently set them in the cart. They looked just about as happy as I felt.
Letâs go home together, okay?
Right after Iâd added the last item on my listâpistachiosâa woman passed by and, without even looking at my face, murmured,
âOh, so beautiful.â
Huh?
It happened so suddenly that for a split second, I couldnât process it. But her words were so clear in my mind that when I replayed them slowly, I felt a quiet warmth bloom in my heart. I wanted to say âThank you,â but she was already far away. Maybe she was in a hurry?
After I paid, I handed my receipt to the staff member at the exit. She touched the sunflower-seed snack and said,
âThis is new.â
âThatâs what I thought,â I said.

Conversations like this happen all the time at my walkable neighborhood Trader Joeâs. New items roll out so fast that even the crew canât keep up, and theyâll often peek into my cart in surpriseââI didnât know this was out!ââand get curious. Itâs rare for that to happen at Costco, so it made me happy. And her smile was just beautiful.
As I was leaving, I couldnât help saying,
âI love your smile!â
She flashed an even bigger one. âThank you!â
In that moment, my heart felt softly warm again.

Back home, while I was moving the roses into a vaseâŠ
âThank you.â
I heard it clearly. I knew right away whose voice it wasââLittle Ayako.â Using Happy Money for me had reached a deep place in my heart. It was a sign of healing.
Quietly, I made a vow:
I release myself from the money curseâthe âWe donât have money, we donât have moneyâ I heard over and over when I was little.
I remembered the lucky colors someone told me recently.
Wait! I checked again, and it said:
Orange is the color where money and love begin.
A big orange bouquet I got by following my intuition.
I feel a new breeze beginning to stir within me.
The week before last, I cut one chain.
Last week, the money chain.
I have a feeling Iâll keep gently loosening the tangled chains of the heartâmine, and maybe someone elseâs too. I can see myself helping to untie those tightly knotted places that have been bound up for so long. Perhaps that is my lifeâs work, my calling.
I tried to attract a small, heart-warming momentâand what arrived was so much more than I imagined. It was a lovely morning.
