“Oh, so beautiful.”

“I love your smile!”

Thank you!”

Two little moments that made my heart feel softly warm while I was out shopping.

The prompt drops at 6 p.m. on Mondays. Plenty of my children’s kindnesses came to mind, but somehow I felt this time wasn’t about them, so I waited a few days.

Then Thursday came. All I could think about was my kids and my daughter’s cat. I made up my mind: if that’s the case, I’ll go ahead and attract something warm myself. I also really needed apples—so off to Costco I went.

In my area, there are six Costcos within a 30-minute drive, just off the top of my head. Thankfully, the closest one is only seven minutes away. If I time it to avoid traffic, I’m there in no time.

First up: five bags of apples (1.36 kg each). All for me—they disappear pretty quickly. My favorite is the small Fuji apples in the Mickey Mouse bag. But every year there’s a stretch when Fuji switches over to Gala, and right now is exactly that “slightly lonely” season. I’m quietly waiting for the Fuji to come back.

As usual, I put bananas and spinach in the cart, then tofu—House brand, four-pack; each pack is 453 g, a bit bigger than the size you often see in Japan. I finally found the flaxseed powder I really wanted and felt relieved. All that was left was pistachios. Just as I was about to pass the flower section, I saw 24-stem rose bouquets on sale. Normally I’d tell myself, “Not today,” and keep walking—but today I stopped.

The week before, I’d bought three bouquets for my birthday, and right after that, my sons brought me flowers too. My whole place was full of flowers. Even so, the orange roses absolutely called me back.

Intuition: “Buy them.”
Me: “Okay, I will.”

I simply followed my intuition and chose something I usually wouldn’t. Even on sale, $15.99 feels quite extravagant for me right now, and it’s not even a necessity. Still, in that moment, I almost heard Abraham say, “Do what feels good.”

The hesitation vanished. Like a little kid, I picked out the bouquet that made my heart flutter—just for me. I lifted the big, heavy roses and gently set them in the cart. They looked just about as happy as I felt.

Let’s go home together, okay?

Right after I’d added the last item on my list—pistachios—a woman passed by and, without even looking at my face, murmured,

“Oh, so beautiful.”

Huh?

It happened so suddenly that for a split second, I couldn’t process it. But her words were so clear in my mind that when I replayed them slowly, I felt a quiet warmth bloom in my heart. I wanted to say “Thank you,” but she was already far away. Maybe she was in a hurry?

After I paid, I handed my receipt to the staff member at the exit. She touched the sunflower-seed snack and said,

“This is new.”
“That’s what I thought,” I said.

Conversations like this happen all the time at my walkable neighborhood Trader Joe’s. New items roll out so fast that even the crew can’t keep up, and they’ll often peek into my cart in surprise—“I didn’t know this was out!”—and get curious. It’s rare for that to happen at Costco, so it made me happy. And her smile was just beautiful.

As I was leaving, I couldn’t help saying,
“I love your smile!”

She flashed an even bigger one. “Thank you!”

In that moment, my heart felt softly warm again.

Back home, while I was moving the roses into a vase

“Thank you.”

I heard it clearly. I knew right away whose voice it was—“Little Ayako.” Using Happy Money for me had reached a deep place in my heart. It was a sign of healing.

Quietly, I made a vow:

I release myself from the money curse—the “We don’t have money, we don’t have money” I heard over and over when I was little.

I remembered the lucky colors someone told me recently.
Wait! I checked again, and it said:
Orange is the color where money and love begin.

A big orange bouquet I got by following my intuition.
I feel a new breeze beginning to stir within me.
The week before last, I cut one chain.

Last week, the money chain.

I have a feeling I’ll keep gently loosening the tangled chains of the heart—mine, and maybe someone else’s too. I can see myself helping to untie those tightly knotted places that have been bound up for so long. Perhaps that is my life’s work, my calling.

I tried to attract a small, heart-warming moment—and what arrived was so much more than I imagined. It was a lovely morning.
