嫉妬と羨望は似ていますが全く別物、羨望は二者関係の感情、嫉妬は三者関係の感情とも言うそうです。
例えば素敵な家を建てた知人がいたとして、素敵な家や建てた知人を単にいいなぁと感じるのが羨望、なんでアイツがと感じるのが嫉妬ですね。
嫉妬の背景には、自分、相手、自分の大切な目的や価値の三者の関係が潜んでいるんです。

*Removed “jealousy” from the list of primary emotions, which I mentioned in the previous column “Anger(1).
Although jealousy and envy seem similar, they are actually quite different. Envy is said to be a dyadic emotion, while jealousy is considered a triadic emotion.
For example, imagine you have an acquaintance who has built a luxurious new home. Simply thinking “That’s wonderful” about the house or the person who built it is envy. Feeling “Why them?” is jealousy.
Behind jealousy lies a three‑part structure:
myself, the other person, and the aspiration or value of my own.
