理論物理学者のCarlo Rovelliによれば、時間の方向とは事物の平衡化なのだそうです(1)。
下の図では、左右の水位は異なっているのに、中央の仕切によって静止しています。ひとたび仕切を取り除くと、水は水位が高い方から低い方へ流れ、やがて安定します。最初の非平衡な状態から、仕切が取り除かれて平衡になるまでの間は不可逆ですよね。たまたま非平衡だったという原因が起こした現象が時間の方向なのだそうです。
時間の方向は、人の視点が起こした現象らしいです。未来は選べても過去は選べない、決断は平衡(未来)へ向かう不可逆な一歩だとも言っています。

Picture the state of balance
Carlo Rovelli, the theoretical physicist, suggests that the direction of time is really just the way things move toward balance(1).
Imagine the picture below: the water levels on each side are different, but the divider in the middle keeps everything still. Once that divider is removed, the water naturally flows from the higher side to the lower one until it settles.
The shift from that uneven beginning to a calm, balanced state is something that can’t be reversed. Rovelli says that this simple fact—that things sometimes start out unbalanced—is what creates the feeling of time moving forward.
In a sense, the direction of time is something that comes from our own perspective. He also says that we can choose our future but not our past, and that every decision we make is an irreversible step toward that future, toward equilibrium.
