One morning, I happened to look up at the sky,
and my eyes caught on the web of power lines
stretched out and intricately crossing one another.

    At first glance,
    they seemed to be competing—
each line asserting itself against the others.

But as I stood there and kept looking,
    a different thought quietly surfaced.

These power lines will, one day,
    inevitably need to be replaced.

    For that future moment,
I’ve learned that there are rules governing how they are arranged.

So that the next craftsman who works on them
    can do so safely,
    and without hesitation.

This is not work driven only by
    efficiency in the present moment,
    nor by immediate profit.

In Japan, there is a culture called mōshiokuri—
a form of passing things on.

    Not only through words,
    but through actions themselves,
intent is handed over to the next person.

Perhaps it reflects a quiet belief that
“my work does not end with me.”

Rather than perfecting things only for the present,
there is a trust in the time that follows.

    A subtle resistance
to work done solely for “now.”

As I looked again at those stretched power lines,
it felt as though they were quietly supporting
    that unspoken spirit—
    endlessly, beneath the open sky.
